Language placement

Do you already have experience with a language? If you have language experience from either school or home there are a few options to make sure that you are in the correct course level of the language and that you are getting credit for the courses you test out of if you place into a higher level than 101. At NAU you can test into a higher level language course (proficiency/placement tests) and/or earn credits for lower level courses (retrocredit).

Learn more detailed information about placement and proficiency exams and retrocredits through the Department of Global Languages and Cultures.

Placement and Proficiency Exams Accordion Closed

For detailed information please refer to the Global Languages and Culture placement and proficiency website. Based on your previous language experience, enroll at your predicted entry level. If above a 101 level, an assessment from a faculty member will be required before the start of the semester.

Spanish

Students seeking Spanish classes above 101 need to take the Online Placement Exam and follow the instructions for enrollment.

Other languages

Please contact the following faculty to make an appointment for assessment:

Deadline: You must apply and pay for retroactive credit within the first four weeks of the semester in which you are attempting the language; aka: enrolled in the more advanced course.

Cost: $30

Apply: Go to the Online Retrocredit Form application process (please use spaces instead of punctuation when answering the questions).
