New IHD Bridge Brief Published: “Supporting Inclusive Practices in Colleges: Empowering Students with Intellectual Disabilities to Succeed”

Posted by on February 26, 2024

IHD recently published its first Bridge Brief of 2024, titled “Supporting Inclusive Practices in Colleges: Empowering Students with Intellectual Disabilities to Succeed.”

This Bridge Brief focuses on IHD’s Supporting Inclusive Practices in Colleges (SIP-C) program, which supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they pursue their educational and employment goals after high school. The brief describes some of key features of the program, including the educational coaches who guide students through every phase of the transition process as well as the peer mentors who help program participants socialize and thrive in the college environment.

Since its launch in 2020, SIP-C can point to many successes. Two of these success stories are detailed in the Bridge Brief. The brief also provides information about the inclusive postsecondary transition workbook that program staff have developed, translating IHD’s experience into a framework that can be replicated in schools throughout the country.

 About Bridge Briefs:

For over a decade, IHD has been publishing Bridge Briefs in order to present research findings with real-world applications in a format suitable for practitioners, families, and other interested individuals. IHD’s team of researchers includes practitioners in the disability disciplines of medicine, psychology, speech-language pathology, and education, among others. This team is engaged in innovative research that has direct implications for disability-related practice. Our Bridge Briefs aim to narrow the gap between research and practice by presenting an overview of research findings with real-world applications in a practitioner-friendly format.
