Request Storage

User Accountability 

Users are accountable for their actions and the data residing on the storage. Violations of this policy may result in temporary or permanent suspension of use privileges.

Intended Use 

All NAU faculty and others who are authorized to serve as a Principal Investigator on extramural sponsored projects through NAU are eligible to use storage space. Students employed by NAU may use storage provided to the faculty member under the sponsorship of Faculty/Principal Investigators.

Storage is to be used for research purposes only. Storage is to be used to store research datasets, and other important data for research being performed on or off of NAU research clusters. This includes either funded or unfunded research projects occurring in academic departments or research centers at NAU. Research purposes can include data analysis or exploration, computational method development and testing, and other tasks specifically related to research projects. Commercial activities are prohibited. Storage is not for educational use. Individuals interested in academic computing resources should contact ITS academic computing at 928-523-9294.

Storage is not to be used to store data of type: personal, general desktop documents, general backups, movies, audio files, or malicious files.

Billing 

Storage which has a monthly billed use agreement, such as the long-term storage, will be handled as follows. Billed storage will be allocated in increments of 1TB. Each fiscal year, the billing account attached to the project filesystem will be billed at $24/TB/year on storage allocated to the project to extend the free 10TB of storage whether or not the actual storage is being utilized. For example, project_N has requested to be allocated 10 additional TB passed the free 10TB.

Of the total 20TB allocated to the project, 10TB will be billed:

$24 * 10 = $240 per year

If a project would like to make billing changes to a project filesystem to increase or decrease the storage allocation, it must be done by sending an email to hpcsupport@nau.edu in order to be charged correctly for the allocated storage.

Malicious/Inappropriate Activity 

Users are prohibited from changing or circumventing access controls that allow themselves or others to perform actions outside their intended authorized privileges.

Users may not use storage to interfere with any service availability, either at NAU, or at other sites.

Users may not utilize storage, or the data portal to host/disseminate data not having to do with the research project the storage was allocated for. 

Misuse of storage can lead to temporary or permanent disabling of accounts, permanent loss of use privileges, and/or disciplinary actions.

Backups 

There are presently no backups of any shared storage on monsoon outside of the users /home, and /common areas. It is the responsibility of the user/group to ensure backups are made if required of data. We are in the process of investigating a backup solution for the long-term storage portion and will announce the availability of it as soon as possible.

Eviction of storage 

There may become a point where eviction of storage is necessary due to non-payment or misuse. When/if this event occurs, we will notify the faculty member with 30 days of notice that storage is facing eviction. We will make every possible effort to assist the faculty member with resolution of this issue and or migration of data elsewhere if necessary.

Monitoring and Privacy 

Users have no explicit or implicit expectation of privacy. HPC staff retains the right to access and actively monitor the content of all content residing on this storage.

Though we will secure your project storage initially per your specifications, it is your responsibility to ensure that access to the data on the storage has the proper permissions to prevent, if required, folks outside your group from viewing the contents of your data. It is your responsibility to contact HPC staff for guidance on access control to data residing on monsoon storage.
