Assistant Preparator Internship Opportunity with the NAU Art Museums

Position: Assistant Preparator Intern

Hours and Compensation:

The NAU Art Museums will work with interns to create a schedule that fits the needs of both the students and the department. The internship is unpaid, but the student may earn credit hours towards his/her degree through his/her home department. The internship is available for up to 3 credit hours per semester, but the student must meet the time and date requirements for each credit level.* The internship can be repeated for an additional semester.

Purpose and Goals:

Interns contribute to the university, museum, and community while gaining skills and building a work record in a career field. The Preparator Assistant Intern will work under the supervision of the Curatorial/ Museum Specialist, Senior, Ty Miller.

This internship presents a unique opportunity for students to develop practical skills as a museum preparator. The intern will be involved in a variety of tasks, including packing, mounting, framing, documenting, handling, and managing collections. They will also receive training in the safe handling of artwork and professional conduct in a museum setting. In AY25, in addition to general duties, we will focus on mounting images for distribution, building storage mounts for 3D objects, and dismounting 2D works on paper for flat drawer storage.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities for this internship opportunity include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the safe handling of artwork of all media.
  • Assists in all tasks related to the layout and installation of an art exhibition.
  • Assist with construction and display projects.
  • Assist with storage, transportation, preparation, and installation of artwork.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Enrolled as an undergraduate in Studio Arts, Liberal Arts, Art History, or Museum Studies program.
  • Demonstrated experience with hand and power tools.
  • Demonstrated experience patching and painting walls.
  • Ability and willingness to work from heights up to 15 feet.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Previous experience handling artwork or valuable objects is a plus.
  • Excellent organization skills and an eye for detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong work ethic.

Physical Requirements:

This internship requires a moderate to high level of physical activity. The intern may be physically active for extended periods of time, lift and carry a maximum of 50 pounds, and navigate stepstools and ladders. They may also stand or sit for extended periods.

*Credit breakdown

1 credit hour   = 45 hours per semester (3 hours per week)

2 credit hours = 90 hours per semester (6 hours per week)

3 credit hours = 135 hours per semester (9 hours per week)
