Northern Arizona University promotes student organizations and the opportunities they provide for students. The University does not tolerate hazing by any affiliated group or individual. The University expects all students and organizations to observe and fully comply with state law, University policy, and applicable laws related to the prohibition of hazing. Students receive the below information regarding hazing prevention and resources during the recruitment process:
Definition
NAU defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a student, employee, or visitor whether individually, or in concert with other persons, against another person, in connection with an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization that is affiliated with Northern Arizona University that contributes to a substantial risk of potential physical injury, mental harm or degradation, or causes physical injury, mental harm or personal degradation or any act otherwise defined as hazing under applicable law.
Law & Policy
Federal: Stop Campus Hazing Act
- Requires reporting of hazing incidents
- Requires hazing prevention education
Arizona Law: Jack’s Law
- Class 1 Misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and fines up to $2,500
- Class 4 Felony if hazing results in death or injury
NAU Policy
The policy explicitly states that Hazing is prohibited. This prohibition extends beyond direct participation to include soliciting another to engage in hazing or aiding and abetting someone involved in hazing. Furthermore, students, faculty, and staff who knowingly permit, authorize, or condone hazing are subject to disciplinary action.

The College Panhellenic Council (CPC) is an umbrella organization focused on supporting member organizations with lifelong membership, networking, leadership development, and civic engagement efforts through service and philanthropic efforts. College Panhellenic sorority recruitment is a formal and mutual selection process. As a participant going through the process, you will visit all of the chapters on the first day of recruitment. After each day, you will have to eliminate chapters and decide what chapters you want to move forward with. It is $50 to register, and scholarship opportunities are available. Register
The United Greek Council (UGC) recruitment is an informal process. The chapters will provide a listing of the events that you can attend during recruitment. The events are social and a way to get to know chapter members and more about their chapter. Some chapters may have invite-only events for those moving forward in their process and have interviews. You may attend multiple chapters’ events. Follow our UGC Instagram account to learn more about each chapter’s events and the fall intake process
Northern Arizona University InterFraternity Council (IFC) will hold its fall recruitment from August 31st to September 4th. Potential New Members (PNMs) must register for recruitment. Registration and all recruitment events for PNMs are free, and there is no cost to participate in recruitment. All PNMs must attend the Chapter Showcase on August 30th in the University Union Fieldhouse. The following Monday, PNMs will have the opportunity to attend individual Chapter events throughout the week. Bids will be given out on September 4th in the University Union Fieldhouse.
