About the Job
Post-Doctoral Associate – Modeling epigenetic pathways to regulate homeostasis in diverse mammal species.
We are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative postdoc to work on a 4-year NSF-sponsored project that is a collaboration between University of Massachusetts Medical School (PI Elinor Karlsson), University of Nevada Las Vegas (PI Allyson Hindle), Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (PI Diane Genereux), and University of Minnesota Twin Cities (PI Valery Forbes). The project aims to develop an integrative, comparative framework that leverages large-scale assays of cellular phenotypes to discover the epigenetic “rules” whereby mammalian species achieve robustness to environmental variation. While many mammals, including humans, use strict homeostasis, stabilizing the internal milieu to protect cells against environmental variation, others have flexible homeostasis, permitting frequent internal fluctuations. The group employs new high-throughput assays of cellular phenotypes and epigenetics with mechanistic modeling and comparative genomics to identify epigenotypes and evolutionary paths conferring cellular robustness, thereby discovering epigenetic rules of life at cellular scale.
The postdoc will be employed in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and supervised by Valery Forbes. This postdoc is responsible for developing and implementing mechanistic models that can quantitatively link cellular morphological and physiological changes with epigenomic changes occurring in primary fibroblasts of phylogenetically diverse mammal species exposed to variable conditions of temperature, glucose, and oxygen. We are looking for a postdoc with demonstrated modeling skills; the postdoc will not generate their own laboratory data, but through collaboration with partner institutions will use the data generated by collaborators to build and parameterize one or more models of the system for the purpose of testing different hypotheses related to the drivers of homeostasis. The postdoc will also be encouraged to collaborate with other members of the laboratory on diverse research projects related to ecotoxicology.
The position term is for 4 years, and is annually renewable depending on performance and availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive training in professional and personal development, research collaboration, presentation and publication of results, outreach, and mentoring. The position includes a competitive salary and health insurance. Review of applications will begin December 15, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. A near-term start date is desired.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
1) Ph.D. in biology (or a relevant sub-discipline) prior to start date.
2) Demonstrated ability to direct and run independent research projects.
3) Working knowledge of cell biology and genomics.
4) Demonstrated ability to code in R, Matlab, Java, or equivalent.
5) Excellent quantitative, writing, and presentation skills.
6) Experience publishing peer-reviewed publications.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Specific knowledge of and experience with mechanistic models of biological systems, especially agent-based models.
2) Experience collaborating with diverse and geographically distant teams.
About the Department
The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) is one of eight freshman-admitting colleges at the University of Minnesota. The College of Biological Sciences is located on both the Minneapolis Campus and the St. Paul Campus, consists of five academic departments (two of which are shared with the Medical School) and houses the Biotechnology Institute (which is co-financed by the College of Science and Engineering). CBS focuses its undergraduate and graduate education and research on the biological sciences, supports evidence-based teaching practices, and encourages multidisciplinary collaborations within and beyond collegiate boundaries. It is one of only two colleges in the country dedicated to the biological sciences, and its students’ academic ranking is the second highest of any college at the University. Currently, CBS is made up of 2,235 undergraduates, 279 graduate students, 108 postdoctoral researchers, 230 staff, and 152 faculty members (including Medical School faculty in shared departments). CBS is committed to building a culture that values contributions from a variety of perspectives and cultivates inclusion for all of our students, faculty, and staff.
