Node Features

Monsoon is a heterogeneous HPC cluster consisting of many different compute system generations due to upgrades over the years. Often, researchers just need a cpu and some memory for their jobs and the details of the configuration aren’t super important! However there are times where these details are important. For instance, some cpus are faster, some have additional instruction sets to be leveraged, etc. Knowing these details can help optimize your workloads to produce quicker results!

Requesting a Feature

In order to request specific features, you can use the ‐‐gres flag in your srun or salloc commands in addition to other srun or salloc flags used.

srun --gres=[feature] [other_flags]

Available features include:

  • CPU Instruction Sets:
    • avx2
    • avx512
  • CPU Types:
    • AMD
      • amd
      • epyc
    • Intel
      • bw (Broadwell)
      • hw (Haswell)
      • il (Ice Lake)
      • sl (Sky Lake)
  • High Memory (can request up to 1963 GiB):
    • himem
  • GPUs (NVIDIA only):
    • gpu
    • GPU Models:
      • a100
      • k80
      • p100
      • v100

For example, to request a node with an Intel Ice Lake CPU and an NVIDIA a100 GPU, an salloc command would look like:

salloc --gres=il:a100 -c4 --mem=2G

(Note: To specify multiple features, use the : character to separate them)
