Claude Enterprise at NAU

Claude Enterprise is Anthropic’s Claude AI, deployed by NAU ITS in a managed environment with enterprise-grade data protections.

What Can You Do With Claude Enterprise?

Analyze contracts, research papers, policy documents, and technical reports. Claude can read, summarize, compare, and answer detailed questions about long or complex documents — useful for grant review, policy work, literature review, and compliance analysis.

Write, review, and debug code with Claude, including agentic development through Claude Code. Developers can use Claude to build, test, and automate as part of a real development workflow, not just as a chat assistant.

Organize work around a defined research question or project across multiple sessions, with context and files that persist over time. Claude Enterprise supports tool integrations and connectors so a project’s context builds as work progresses.

Claude Enterprise accounts are approved for Level 1-3 data. Any other type of Claude account — personal, Free, Pro, Max, or Team — is approved for Level 1 (public) data only. This makes Claude Enterprise the right choice for work involving institutional data that needs more protection than public information.

Like any AI tool, Claude is still evolving. Its features, models, and capabilities are subject to change, but the fundamentals described here are in place.

Is Claude Enterprise the Right Tool for You?

NAU offers more than one AI tool, and Claude Enterprise isn’t always the most cost-effective choice. If the majority of your work happens in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Teams, ITS recommends considering M365 Copilot (Premium) instead — Claude is already included there at no extra usage cost, and billing is flat-rate. Claude Enterprise is the better fit if your work is primarily outside Microsoft 365 apps and involves any of the following:

  • Analyzing contracts, research papers, policy docs, or technical reports
  • Writing, reviewing, or debugging code, including agentic development with Claude Code
  • Multi-session project work organized around a defined research question
  • Modeling large institutional datasets that require Level 1-3 data handling
  • Running multi-session agentic projects with tool integrations and connectors

Personal or unmanaged AI accounts — including individual Claude Free, Pro, Max, or Team accounts — are only permitted for use with public (Level 1) data.

Claude Enterprise – Licensing & Cost

Claude Enterprise billing works differently than standalone/consumer accounts. It requires both a paid yearly subscription AND monthly usage credit purchases. Claude Enterprise usage is billed monthly to your department’s speedchart. Departments set a monthly spending cap for each user, so costs stay predictable and no one can exceed their department’s approved budget.

About the yearly subscription:

  • This is an annual “seat license,” purchased through NAU ITS; license term follows NAU’s fiscal year (July – June).
  • Cost is prorated quarterly; billing occurs when the individual is added into Claude Enterprise.
  • The purchase of a yearly subscription does not include any usage credits.  In other words, purchasing a subscription doesn’t let you actually use Claude; it is essentially a seat/license fee required to have access to a Claude Enterprise account.

About the monthly usage credits and cost:

  • An additional monthly usage credit purchase is required in order to actually use your Claude Enterprise account. This is billed directly to the speedchart provided by the department, based on actual consumption.
  • Departments will control costs by working with ITS to designate a monthly allowance cap for teams/individuals in their Claude Enterprise group.
  • Teams/individuals cannot exceed their monthly allowance cap.
  • Caps can be adjusted if additional usage is needed for specific projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use Claude Enterprise?

  • Faculty, staff, affiliates, and student employees are eligible for a Claude Enterprise account. A speedchart is required for purchase.
  • Personal accounts and student accounts (for students not employed by NAU) are not eligible for Claude Enterprise. These should remain on a personal (non-NAU) email address and are limited to public (Level 1) data only.

Can I use a personal Claude account for NAU work?

  • Personal or unmanaged AI accounts, including individual Claude accounts using an NAU email address, are only permitted for use with public (Level 1) data. For work involving Level 2 or 3 data, use Claude Enterprise or another NAU-managed, enterprise protected AI tool.

What do I need to know about permitted data usage in Claude?

How are monthly usage charges calculated?

  • Claude Enterprise monthly usage is charged at Claude’s API Rates, with usage costs that scale with model and task.
