Sing with NAU Choirs!

Two Ways to Join:

Non-Audition & Audition Choirs

NAU choral ensembles are open to all students, regardless of major. In addition to music majors and minors, we welcome undergraduate and graduate students from all programs of study to create a thriving choral community. NAU’s choirs pride themselves in achieving musical excellence in an inclusive and supportive setting. All types of singers—from beginners to advanced singers—are welcome. Whether this is your first choir, or your tenth, there is a place for you!

You do not need to audition to sing with University Singers!

Just Register for MUP 160-02 and come to the first class rehearsal on Wednesday, August 26 at 6:30 pm in The Performing & Fine Arts Building, Room 145 (Choir Room).

Email any questions to choirs@nau.edu.

Auditions are required for all other ensembles.

  • Shrine of the Ages
  • Vox Montes
  • Vox Astra
  • Vocal Jazz

In order to sing with one of these groups, you will meet with the conductors in The Performing & Fine Arts Building, Room 145 (Choir Room) for your audition in August (August 21-23) after filling out the form through Canvas and scheduling your audition at the page you will be directed to.

Over the summer, all interested students should register for a choral ensemble in consultation with their advisor. This course will serve as as a placeholder until you complete the placement audition.

Email choirs@nau.edu with any questions.

About the Placement and Audition Process

This is an opportunity for you and the NAU conductors to get to know each other musically.  We know this can make singers nervous, but we aim to be supportive and positive. We want to get to know you and hear your passion for singing! This process helps us identify your ensemble and voice part/range.

Audition materials

To access the audition materials for this upcoming semester, please complete the following steps:

  1. Self-enroll in the Canvas course “Ensemble Placement Reference”.
  2. Log into Canvas by using your NAU ID.
  3. On the Ensemble Placement Reference home page, “select choir”.
  4. Fill out the Choral Studies Audition form and the Choir Audition Time form.

At your audition we will: explore your range, sing a song, and (if appropriate) sight-sing.

  • We will explore your vocal range through brief exercises.
  • You will sing for us! You may choose to:
    • bring your own prepared song. Some examples of prepared songs include art songs or arias, musical theater songs, folk songs from around the world, or a choir song you’ve  sung before. Those interested in vocal jazz should choose to sing a short part of a jazz standard. If you bring a prepared song and you’d like piano accompaniment, please bring the sheet music.
    • sing a well-known piece for which we will have sheet music, including: My Country ‘Tis of Thee, We Shall Overcome, Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, Amazing Grace, or Happy  Birthday
  • We will ask those who read music to sight-read and sing a short excerpt.
