Pathogens

PMI features several pathogens continuously researched by lab groups, which are featured in many research projects.

Bacteria

Antimicrobial resistance Antimicrobial resistance is a pandemic. The Schweizer Lab works on Gram-negative bacteria to study antibiotic resistance in diverse problem bacteria like Acinetobacter species, Burkholderia sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Klebsiella sp. to better understand novel antimicrobial drug discovery.

Brucella spp. Brucellosis is among the world’s most common zoonotic infections. The Foster Lab works on evolution of this genus to better understand transmission, epidemiology, and global spread.

Burkholderia pseudomallei This is a soil dweller bacterium that is found in topical regions around the world. It is the causative agent of melioidosis, with hotspots in Thailand and Australia. Infection is most commonly acquired by aerosols breathed in during topical storms occupationally by rice farmers. In its severest forms, melioidosis is a disseminated bacteremia that kills many. PMI research has supported efforts to better therapeutics, diagnostics, and vaccines.

Clostridium botulinum Need CAPTION from JASON SAHL.

Francisella tularensis Need CAPTION from DAVE WAGNER.

MRSA Need CAPTION from TALIMA PEARSON.

Yersinia pestis Need CAPTION from JOE BUSCH.

Environmental DNA

Bat, Bird, and Small Mammal Diets Metabarcoding has revolutionized our understanding of animal diets. The Foster and Walker labs assess what animals are eating but sequencing their poop.

Environmental Sampling Need CAPTION from FAITH WALKER.

Species from Feces Need CAPTION from FAITH WALKER.

Fungi

Coccidioides spp. Coccidioides causes coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever. It is the most common infectious disease in Arizona. Barker Lab, along with Keim, Settles, Sahl, and Wagner groups are working to understand and combat this important disease.

Pseudogymnoascus destructans White-Nose Syndrome is a fungal disease that has devastated bat populations in North America. The Foster lab collaborates with biologists and land managers throughout the world on the ecology and evolution of this pathogen.

Immunology

UNKNOWN (Settles, Keim) Need TOPIC, IMAGE, AND CAPTION from ERIK SETTLES.

PepSeq Need IMAGE and CAPTION from JASON LADNER.

Microbiomes & Bioinformatics

Caries and Oral Microbiomes Need CAPTION from VIACHESLAV FOFANOV.

Gut Microbiomes and Cognitive Diseases Need CAPTION from EMILY COPE.

Sinus Microbiomes Need CAPTION from EMILY COPE.

QIIME2 Need CAPTION from GREG CAPORASO.

Viruses

West Nile Virus Need CAPTION from CRYSTAL HEPP.

Ranaviruses Need CAPTION from JOSEPH MIHALJEVIC.

Coronaviruses The Ladner and Foster labs are working with collaborators throughout the US to assess coronavirus (not SARS-CoV-2) circulation in bats.

Rabiesvirus Need CAPTION from FAITH WALKER.
