Federal TEACH Grant

Additional funding to pay for your education

A federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant can provide up to $4,000 a year to students going into teaching.

Federal TEACH Grant criteria

To receive the grant each year, students must each year complete the following:

  1. Submit an NAU TEACH Grant application form
    • If you’re enrolled in a TEACH-eligible program and have submitted a FAFSA, we will add the application form to your LOUIE to do list.
  2. Complete TEACH Counseling
  3. Complete a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve, which includes:

    • becoming a full-time teacher for at least four academic years within eight years after program completion.
    • serving as a “highly qualified” teacher at a low-income school or educational service agency.
    • serving in a high-need field.
    • providing the US Department of Education with documentation of progress toward completing your service obligation.
    • maintaining a 3.25 or higher GPA in an eligible undergraduate or graduate program.

Lifetime Limits

  • Undergraduates: $16,000 total
  • Graduates: $8,000 total

Deadlines

The TEACH Grant Application must be completed each year by the following deadlines:

  • Oct. 1 for fall semester or full academic year
  • March 1 for spring semester

Summer TEACH Grants might be available to students taking summer classes. Eligible students will receive notifications and steps via email.

How is TEACH Grant different than the AZ Teachers Academy Scholarship?

TEACH Grant

  • Source: Federal student aid
  • Award type: Grant aid that can be applied to any charges and refund to students if all charges have been paid.
  • Teaching commitment: Teach at least 4 years at a U.S. school that serves low-income students.
  • Loan repayment: If teaching commitment is not met, the grant funds convert into a federal unsubsidized loan and interest is accrued retroactively.

ATA Scholarship

  • Source: State of Arizona
  • Award type: Waiver that covers remaining tuition and mandatory fees after other scholarships and grants have been applied. Cannot be refunded to students.
  • Teaching commitment: Teach 1 year for every (part of a) year with ATA membership in a public or BIE school in Arizona.
  • Loan repayment: If teaching commitment is not met, the funds convert to a 10-year loan.
