Program overview
The Journey for Underrepresented Medical Professions (JUMP), is a grant funded program housed in Northern Arizona University’s College of Health and Human Services.
Program purpose and need:
With support from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) grant number D18HP29041, this project will increase the number of disadvantaged students entering and successfully completing health professions degrees. More specifically this program focuses on increasing diversity in and capacity of allied health and primary care professionals. The overall project goal is to strengthen the nation’s health and human services workforce by creating a pipeline for students to increase the racial and ethnic diversity in the health professions.
This will be achieved by three interventions within JUMP:
Program for Realizing Educational Potential (PREP)
- A summer program that gives students a head start in preparing for their college career!
- Scholars receive a stipend for participation
- Participation in all planned activities is required Monday-Saturday
- A year-long post-baccalaureate program for prospective physician assistant students (students must have applied to the NAU PA program but not granted admission). Curriculum to prepare scholars to be competitive for the PA application
- Scholars receive a stipend for participation
- Seven scholars are selected yearly
- Support tailored to the needs of Veteran scholars and their dependents who are interested in, or currently pursuing a degree in a health profession
- Guidance and educational support opportunities throughout a scholar’s college career
- Peer-to-peer mentorships and professional connections
- Direction in navigating Veteran Administration processes and accessing VA benefits
