Abstract

This curriculum unit, rooted in Indigenous Hawaiian knowledge systems, introduces keiki to the foundational principles of hoʻokele through a STEM-integrated, culturally sustaining approach. Grounded in the ʻIke Kūpuna and revitalized by contemporary voyagers, this unit centers on the brilliance of Hawaiian science in the context of celestial navigation, environmental observation,
and wayfinding.
The purpose of this unit is to foster a deep appreciation and practical understanding of the
technologies, patterns, and cultural values embedded in hoʻokele. Through STEM, hands-on,
inquiry-based learning, keiki will build cognitive, motor, and social-emotional skills while being grounded in ʻIke Hawaiʻi, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and culturally responsive practices.
