Job Opportunity: Wildland Fire Support Module Operations Technician
The Forest Stewards Guild is hiring a full-time seasonal position in San Antonio, Texas! The Wildland Fire Support Module Operations Technician position encompasses both fire and land management responsibilities in a challenging, complex and high-tempo military wildland fire environment. Opportunities exist for leadership development and future employment or detail. Candidates should have a passion for:

  • Labor-intensive fieldwork.
  • Mechanical thinning under the broader goal of prescribed fire and wildfire prevention.

  • Increasing diversity and inclusion in the fire practitioner community.

Organization Description:
This position reports to two organizations. Daily operations will be overseen by the Wildland Fire Support Module (WSM) leader on-site, an employee of the Bureau of Land Management Arizona (BLM). Career development plans, training strategies, and administrative/human relations support will be provided by the Forest Stewards Guild. The WSM will assist Air Force installations and Inter-Agency partners by providing staffing and support to the Air Force Wildland Fire Branch (AFWFB).
Position Description:
Successful candidates will ideally have experience in wildland fire or prescribed fire operations, with a focus on chainsaw skills, heavy equipment operation, effective communication, and a commitment to working with diverse populations. They will:

  • Utilize chainsaws and skid steers for hazardous fuels reduction, prescribed fire line construction, and wildfire prevention.
  • Assist with pre and post-fire monitoring.
  • Support initial attack on wildfire suppression efforts.
  • Season permitting, engage in all aspects of prescribed fire including fireline construction, ignition, holding, mop-up, rehabilitation.
  • Operate and maintain motor vehicles, UTVs, fire engines and small engines.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, in remote locations, and on difficult or hazardous terrain and / or in other physically demanding environments. This includes potential risk for unexploded ordinance and other related hazards.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, including a commitment to principles of Duty, Integrity and Respect.
  • Candidates demonstrating proficiency and growth throughout their nine-month term will be strongly considered for future employment or details with the Gravitas Peak Wildland Fire Module. The Module prepares young firefighters for competitive employment with the Nation’s land management agencies and a path to success and independence.

Compensation and Timeline:
Pay: $18.00/hr. Paid leave and paid holiday benefits are provided. Employer-sponsored health and dental care coverage is available after 30 days of continuous employment. Housing is not provided.
