The philosophy of the Commission on Ethnic Diversity is to create an environment that facilitates the retention, education, and recruitment of ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and students. A goal of the commission is to educate the campus community on ethnic issues, serve as a role model for the appreciation of diversity and encourage ethnic diversity in the curriculum.

The Selection Committee for the President’s Award for Ethnic Diversity uses these underlying principles as a basis in the evaluation process of all nomination. Following, please find criteria, definitions, and guidelines, used in the evaluation process by the Selection Committee for the President’s Award for Ethnic Diversity.

III. Impact: How does the individual/group impact ethnic diversity at NAU? Is the impact visible or highly recognizable to the NAU community? [The selection committee supports programs which impact as many faculty, staff, and students as possible.]
IV. Uniqueness: Does this individual/group exhibit uniqueness in the support/advancement of ethnic diversity at NAU?
    V. Longevity: How long has this individual/group been active in enhancing ethnic diversity at NAU? Is this an isolated event? [Please note that the committee places extreme importance on sustaining programs that promote ethnic diversity.]
