AZTrans Exhibit at the 2018 Flagstaff STEM Celebration

AZTrans operated an exhibit at the 2018 Flagstaff STEM Celebration, which was held on March 5th, 2018 at the NAU Walkup Skydome. Students from all 28 Flagstaff K-12 schools were invited, and hundreds attended the event. The transportation-focused exhibit operated by AZTrans was similar to the setup utilized at the 2017 NAU Science and Engineering day and had equipment set up to show how traffic signal systems work, as well as computers… Read more

Pedestrian Behavior at Signalized Intersection Crosswalks

An Observational Study of Factors Associated with Distracted Walking, Pedestrian Violations, and Walking Speed

In the past two decades, cellular phone and smartphone use in the United States has increased substantially. While mobile phones provide a convenient way for people to communicate, the distraction caused by the use of these devices has led to unintended traffic safety and operational consequences. Although it is well-recognized that distracted driving is extremely dangerous for all road users (including… Read more

Improving Adaptive / Responsive Signal Control Performance: Implications of Non-Invasive Detection and Legacy Timing Practices

Posted by nbl42 on June 30, 2017

Sponsor: Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)

PI: Edward J. Smaglik

Project Start|End Date: 2014 | 2017

In this study, NAU led a team of three universities to determine the impact the use of non-invasive vehicles has on adaptive control.  The research team developed a home-grown data collection device that was used to collect event-based detection data at multiple sites across the state of Oregon.  This collected data and associated products were then modeled and used to provide guidance for the DOT for… Read more

Addressing Bicycle-Vehicle Conflicts with Alternate Signal Control Strategies

Posted by nbl42 on

Sponsor: National Institute for Transportation and Communities (Prime: PSU)

PI: Edward J. Smaglik

Project Start|End Date: 2015 | 2017

In this project, NAU worked with Portland State University to develop guidance for practitioners for reducing bicycle-motor vehicle conflicts at signalized intersections.  The team performed a simulation of various alternate signal control strategies to determine the impact of said strategies on all users (Leading Bike Interval, Split Leading Bike Interval, and Bike Scramble were three of the strategies), reached out to practitioners via… Read more
