Education and training
Open office hours
Office hours are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursdays (excluding university holidays) via Microsoft Teams. Register for open office hours.
Schedule a consultation
It is best to schedule a meeting with the Human Research Protection Office (HRPP). You can schedule an appointment by emailing IRB@nau.edu. Please include your availability, the amount of time needed for the meeting, and the purpose of the meeting.
HRPP staff can provide guidance on the submission process, help determine the appropriate type of submission, and address questions about compliance requirements. Please note that we cannot provide pre-submission feedback on your project materials. Any review of project-specific materials must occur within a formal IRBNet submission so that it is properly documented for regulatory and audit purposes.
Students are recommended to contact their faculty advisor for help designing their study, preparing submission materials, and assisting with addressing revision requests. View Investigator/faculty advisor responsibility and qualifications.
Training
All members of the research team are expected to complete online training prior to conducting any activities related to the human research.
Researchers should complete training prior to the IRBNet submission. HRPP staff verify training at intake. If training is not completed, the submission package will be withdrawn in 7 days and must be resubmitted.
NAU Researchers
Research faculty, staff, advisors, and students must complete the NAU human subjects component of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online training program. The IRB CITI training certification is valid for a four-year period, after which time refresher training must be completed. It is recommended that a copy of the completion certificate is printed and maintained. If CITI training was completed prior to 2019, training is valid for a three-year period.
Courses that qualify for the IRB
- Social, Behavioral, and Education Research
- Health and Human Services, Biomedical Research
External researchers
Research personnel not affiliated with NAU must also have CITI training. To request NAU CITI affiliation for access to trainings, please email irb@nau.edu with the person’s first and last name, email address, and which course they plan to take. In lieu of the NAU CITI training requirement, NAU may accept documentation of human subjects training completion in accordance with researchers’ home institution.
Instructional videos
Access instructional videos for guidance on IRB submissions, review processes, and human research requirements.
