Teacher resources
- Teachers will need a google account (free) to access google sites and to print student pages and evaluation.
- Teachers will need to have the following materials available to the student groups.
Science Notebooks Pencils Metric Rulers Computers Printer (color for graphs) Glue Sticks Tape Poster Board 12 X 18 Tagboard Colored Pencils Graph Paper (Pocket Portfolios) - Science Notebooks: Various types can be used. Spiral Notebooks, Looseleaf Notebooks, Teacher-Created, Report Folders with metal brads are all useful, but our preference is a Composition Book. The pages are well bound and not often lost or torn out. Students can number the pages, so you can ask for certain tasks on common pages, allowing you to evaluate notebooking easily and quickly. Please feel free to modify any material to grade level ability. For example, teachers of young students may want to reword the questions in Predictions and Solutions to provide a more narrow focus to the questions.
- We suggest that although this website is centered in the fourth and fifth grade levels, younger or older students could also benefit from these activities. We have provided the Pocket Portfolio project to specifically give an opportunity to second and third grade students. Posters and PowerPoints, can be produced at any grade level since an open-ended project lends itself to any level of learning. Older students may want to use notebooks for observations and information instead of using the premade student task sheets.
- There are many opportunities for reading in the websites that students access during the tasks. Additional Reading Material: Teachers can augment in the classroom with reading on climate change, adaptation of organisms, the career choice of environmental biologist or forester.
Access to edHelper for grade level reading: www.edhelper.com (You will need a subscription, but it is very affordable.)
