Student introduction
A scientist is not always an Einstein or even a Frankenstein. It can be anyone who uses inquiry skills to solve a problem. Are you ready to be a scientist? If so, your team will participate in a series of tasks that will lead you on a scientific environmental journey! You may discover answers to your questions or you may end up with questions of your own.
Scenario
For the last 25 years, at Sunset Crater, the climate change has left its mark. One of the interdependent systems is the Pinyon Pine and the insect scale. Lately, many trees are looking like “Charlie Brown Christmas Trees”. What is causing these trees to have this appearance? Why is it happening now? What can we do about it? Your job will be to find out the answers to these questions.
Roles
Teams of student scientists should have expertise in science, math, reading, writing, and art; and of course, technology. All skills will be needed to complete tasks. Be ready to become a team leader in some tasks and a team member in others.
The BIG question
What is the effect of climate change on the pinyon pine and the scale insect (Matsucoccus acalyptus)?
