Peer Jacks Mentoring
Making connections and building community
Connecting you with the mountain experience wherever you are, the Peer Jacks Mentoring programs (Peer Jacks, Transfer Jacks, and Jacks State) support incoming students as they find their community and personal success at Northern Arizona University. We offer three programs with one mission:
Peer Jacks Accordion Closed
- Serving first-year freshmen students.
Since 2010, the Peer Jacks Mentoring Program has supported first-year students through their transition into NAU. Our team of 50+ mentors and staff work closely with our students to meet them where they are at and get them connected with what they value most.
Students accomplish this through developing:
- Knowledge & awareness of campus resources & processes
- Personal value/goal identification in alignment with community integration
- Engagement in purposeful academic support and educational activities
Every semester Peer Jacks mentors host events and trips such as a Spooky Seasonings dinner in partnership with the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, trips to go kayaking with Outdoor Adventures, and a fieldtrip to Bearizona.
Transfer Jacks Accordion Closed
- Serving new transfer students at NAU.
Our vision is to create a culture where transfer students are valued and thrive, cultivating a robust community for transfer students at NAU. We provide resources, programming, and a dedicated lounge space to empower students to achieve their goals during their transition to NAU and throughout their educational journey.
Every day we seek to provide a valuable peer mentoring experience, advocate for our students, and create a sense of community through our interactions, events, and spaces. We host weekly events in our lounge where transfer students can meet folks who share their experiences and develop profound and lasting connections at NAU.
Jacks State Accordion Closed
- Serving Statewide and UNAD students.
Jacks State Peer Mentoring supports new NAU students who enroll in degree-seeking programs at NAU statewide locations and students who choose to participate in the NAU universal admissions program at select community college partnership locations. Our team of peer mentors will provide regular 1-1 touchpoints with their assigned mentees, each of whom will always know that they have the entire NAU team to support them. These monthly peer-to-peer meetings encompass topics that will help students develop a sense of belonging and community, identify resources, develop personal and academic goal setting, and navigate their unique paths towards academic and career readiness.
- Mentoring Support: Peer-to-peer meetings and follow-up prompted by a strategic plan of action aligned with the student lifecycle.
- Wrap-Around Care: Virtual Meetings/Workshops will be scheduled to support student readiness and connectedness with the NAU community.
Peer Jacks offers 1-on-1 peer mentoring to incoming students and exposure to NAU resources.
The program provides a peer network to assist in the transition to college. Peer Jacks also hosts educational and social opportunities that support a path to academic success. Through developing self-direction and promoting learning beyond the classroom, we empower students to achieve autonomy while completing their degree.
