Student Spotlight: Ava Elia wins ITE Award

Northern Arizona University civil engineering student Ava Elia has been named the 2025 Outstanding Undergraduate Student by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Mountain District—a significant regional honor that recognizes exceptional academic performance, leadership, and dedication to the field of transportation.

A junior in the Steve Sanghi College of Engineering, Elia is already making a lasting impact on campus and in the transportation community. She serves as president of NAU’s ITE student chapter, where she has helped grow student engagement and professional development opportunities. She is also a key contributor at NAU’s AZTrans Laboratory, a premier transportation research center housed within the College of Engineering.

At the AZTrans Lab, Elia supports projects that advance Arizona’s transportation systems through data analysis, simulation, and traffic operations research. Her work not only demonstrates her technical acumen but also her commitment to improving mobility and safety across the state.

“My experience at NAU has been incredible,” Elia said. “I’ve gained so much knowledge during my time here and have had the opportunity to connect with inspiring individuals who continue to shape my journey.”

Elia credits her success to the mentorship and support of NAU’s faculty and the hands-on opportunities offered through both the ITE chapter and the AZTrans Lab. “Receiving this award means a great deal to me. I’ve worked hard to earn recognitions like this, and I’m incredibly grateful to the NAU faculty for their unwavering support.”

As she continues to chart her academic and professional path, Elia remains excited for what’s ahead. “As a junior, I’m still exploring my path, but I look forward to what’s ahead and continuing to make the most of my time at NAU.”

Congratulations, Ava!
