The Commission for Indigenous Peoples’ purpose is to consider, evaluate and analyze all matters pertaining to Native Americans at Northern Arizona University, including establishing goals and priorities, engaging Native American faculty/staff/students, disseminating and sharing information, and most importantly, advising the President on these matters.
The land that NAU resides upon has been the home and heart of Indigenous people for many generations. Indigenous perseverance and resilience are a big part of NAU’s history, and as one of the Commission for Indigenous Peoples’ co-chairs, I am dedicated to continuing our legacy of a strong and supportive NAU Indigenous community. As we thrive and succeed in the world of higher education, CIP also ensures that we are honoring our ancestors and creating opportunities for our future generations. – Sheena Hale (Co-chair)
The resiliency and strength of Indigenous Peoples throughout time is inspiring, and as an Indigenous person, I use this to focus my own efforts at NAU, and I uphold my sacred responsibility to make things better than what was encountered and to nurture and support future generations. It is my hope that, as a Co-Chair of the Commission for Indigenous Peoples, we can contribute to making systemic and structural changes that support the growth and success of Native American and Indigenous Peoples at NAU. – Ora Marek-Martinez (Co-Chair)
