For NAU staff, students, and faculty that are looking for volunteer opportunities in the Flagstaff area, there are local organizations offering opportunities to serve outside of our national service programs.

Research Program Assistant | Central Navajo Agency | Chinle | Interacts with the investigators, collaborators, and participants in a research environment. This person will assist in carrying out research in accordance with good clinical practices such as obtaining informed consent, data and specimen collection and participant follow-up as needed. |
Community Engagement Navigator | City of Surprise - Human Service & Community Vitality Department | Suprise | Represent the Human Service & Community Vitality Department and serve as a connection point for community members and non-profit organizations as well as community helpers and organizations seeking information about services offered by the department. |
Resource Specialist | City of Surprise - Human Service & Community Vitality Department | Suprise | Represent the Be Connected program and serve as a connection point for service members, veterans, family members as well as community helpers and organizations seeking information about the program. |
Health Coach | Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health | Chinle | Complete a comprehensive training for sexuality education for youth ,partner with a certificated trainer to deliver lessons during a week-long summer camp to Indigenous youth with parent permission to attend and participate, provide additional activities aimed at fitness and cultural traditions, interview youth about their wellness journey and future goals. |
STEM Innovator and Influencer VISTA | W.F. Killip Elementary School | Flagstaff | The VISTA will build capacity within our STEM programs by focusing on curriculum development, volunteer engagement, fundraising, outreach, and program evaluation. |
River Friendly Living Program Assistant | Friends of the Verde River | Cottonwood | Assist with river conservation efforts related to the River Friendly Living Program. They will develop educational materials for a broad range of constituents and lead participation in community outreach events, including tabling at local events, mixers, and other networking events. |
Watershed Report Card Project Assistant | Friends of the Verde River | Cottonwood | Assisting data collection and development of new scores. They will also communicate the findings of the report card with the public, elected officials, and agency staff. |
Research Assistant - Project: PAWS | Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health | Chinle | Conduct 1:1 interviews, carry out surveys, and create maps of free-roaming dog populations on the Navajo Nation to update and carry out the Navajo Nation Animal Welfare, Control, and Care Plan, and to develop a legislative task force for moving policy issues forward. |
Research Assistant - Project: Teenage Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) | Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health | Chinle | The program will leverage community and cultural strengths to postpone sexual initiation, clearly communicate the risks and consequences associated with sex, and develop youth’s knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and skills to make positive decisions as they move through adolescence. |
Research Assistant: Project - Diné Household Water Survey (DHWS) | Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health | Chinle | Implement a culturally-tailored household water needs assessment with a representative sample of households across the Navajo Nation. |
