Project 005 Description: Students in this research area might work on laboratory measurements of materials relevant to outer Solar System bodies (e.g., Europa, Titan, Pluto). These are hands-on experiments using spectrometers, vacuum chambers, cryogenic sample chambers, and electron guns, among other technical capabilities. There is also ongoing research related to the effects of solar radiation on rocky material (that is, airless surfaces such as the moon or asteroids). Alternately, a student might work in the area of computational chemistry, using high performance computing to create a theoretical underpinning for the observed laboratory results.
