Frequently asked questions
What is the Army ROTC?
ROTC is a college elective that teaches you the skills needed for success after college. You’ll combine classroom time with hands-on experience, and learn leadership and management skills. And because it’s an elective, you can try it out for up to two years. Whatever you decide, the experience you’ll gain in Army ROTC will give you the confidence you need to be a success in college and beyond. Whether you choose to pursue a career in the Army or in the corporate world, Army ROTC is “unlike any other college course you can take.” It is the best leadership course on campus.
Am I required to join the army if I join Army ROTC?
The short answer is no, but contracted Cadets are required to fulfill their contractual agreement. See the scholarship page for more information.
What is the leadership lab?
The leadership lab serves two very important purposes: it gives the MS III’s a chance to practice leading small units in preparation for Advanced Camp; and it gives the MS I & II’s the opportunity to learn important skills. During most leadership labs the MS III class will lead the underclassmen in battle drills under the supervision of the MS IV class.
Does it cost me anything to join?
Yes. The ROTC department charges a small class fee for MS 150/250/151/251/130/230/131/231. Contact the Program Coordinator for current class fees. Those participating in all three classes receive equipment and uniforms.
May I take the classes without joining the Army ROTC?
Yes. We have many civilian students who join us at Physical Training in the mornings and who take the freshman level leadership classes (MS101 / MS102). If you are going to take the Leadership Lab, however, you will be enrolled in the program and required to wear the uniform to MS class and PT.
Is there an age limit?
Yes. Cadets must receive their commission before their 34th birthday, but there are waivers available.
What does ROTC stand for?
ROTC stands for Reserve Officers Training Corps. The ROTC is a commissioning program, and upon successful completion of the program, you will become a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, National Guard, or Army Reserves.
What is a typical week like for ROTC cadets?
As a fully-participating MS I, you are committed to 7.5 hours a week: physical training (PT) for 4.5 hours (1.5 hours each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), one hour of class, and 2 hours for Leadership Lab on Thursday afternoon. You will wear the physical fitness uniform to PT and ACU’s to class and lab.
What is a typical semester like for ROTC cadets?
During each semester ROTC cadets attend classes, labs, and PT each week. Two or three times each semester there are weekend events to ensure all training is accomplished. For more information on weekend events, see: Cadet Events.
