Unlike a caption, designed to accompany the image as part of the same view, alt text is used to replace the image in instances it would not be available to the page visitor. One you may have encountered is when a page loads improperly, and the images don’t appear; when that happens, the alt text loads in the same spot so that a user could read the content and still understand what the image was and how it is being used in the page.

However, the main purpose alt text serves is for accessibility, allowing users who are navigating your site with the use of assistive technology like screen readers to still gain all the information and context needed to understand and connect with your pages. For your alt text to provide a good experience for all users, you will want it to follow these basic guidelines:

Alt text should be detailed while remaining succinct– between 80 and 125 characters

It should only contain descriptive information; anything explaining the image or its purpose belongs in the content around it in the page

Do not use content from within the page in the alt text

Structure your alt text in a simple sentence

Please check out our Alt Text Example page for specific samples of problematic alt text in a more realistic context.

WordPress best practices index

Adding images to a page

Cropping Images

Headings

Image Standards

Links

Page Titles and Names

Posts

Alt text in WordPress When using images in your WordPress pages, it is essential that you include alt text with the images that you upload.
