WCCER Use Policy

Educational and research users

All research and education users of the Walnut Creek Center will fill out an application form (attached) that provides the details of the proposed use. This form must be signed by a faculty or full-time staff sponsor from a partner institution. This form will be submitted (electronically via email) to the Station Manager at least two weeks prior to the proposed use.

Partner institutions ( Northern Arizona University, The Arboretum at Flagstaff and Prescott College) are each allocated 600 user days per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). A user day is defined as the use of the Walnut Creek Center by one person for more than two hours during a 24 hour day (note that a single overnight user will thus be accounted as two user days). Use in excess of this allocation must be approved by the Leadership Board and will be charged at an additional $10 per user day (to be paid into the joint WCCER restricted account at Prescott College).

Independent users and users from non-partner institutions are encouraged to utilize WCCER facilities, but need to be sponsored by a Prescott College faculty member. Such uses will be assessed a fee of $15 per user day (to be paid into the WCCER joint account). Scholarships may be approved by the WCCER Leadership Board to waive all or part of these fees on a case-by-case basis.

Acceptable uses

All proposed uses must be consistent with the WCCER Mission Statement and must meet the requirements laid out in the WCCER Special Use Permits with the U.S. Forest Service. The Station Manager will make the determination of acceptability, except in the following circumstances:

• Any significant manipulations or modifications to WCCER facilities or grounds (soil disturbance of > 1 m2, vertebrate collection, tree removal or planting, etc.) require advance approval of the Leadership Board and U.S. Forest Service.
• Equine use is generally prohibited in the riparian and flood plain areas (as defined by the presence of riparian vegetation and trees such as walnut, cottonwood and willow) as is use by other domestic grazing animals such as goats, llamas, etc. The Leadership Board may grant exceptions to this policy for short-term use. Livestock use elsewhere in the WCCER permit area requires advance approval by the Leadership Board.
• Group size is generally limited to 40 people. Exceptions to this policy can be made by the Station Manager.
