We have three main centers, the NAU Veteran Services Center, Franke College of Business Veterans Center and NAU Yuma Veterans Center. At these Veteran Centers, you can expect:

• VA education benefits support and advocacy for military-connected and veteran students
• Connections to campus, local, regional, and national resources/services Community and events all semester (monthly VET BBQs, social/professional/service events, workshops for career, and financial planning)
• Veteran lounge and study space to meet, relax, and get work done (kitchen appliances, TV, pool/ping pong, computers, and free printing

This orientation is designed for Active Duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, Veterans, and eligible dependents who plan to use VA education benefits. Participants will learn about the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill programs, and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35), including eligibility requirements, benefit usage, enrollment procedures, and resources available to support academic success.

The session also provides guidance on maximizing education benefits, understanding monthly housing and book allowances, maintaining compliance with VA requirements, and connecting with campus support services to help students achieve their educational and career goals.

FYS 141 (First Year Seminar) – Veteran Integration into Higher Education is designed to explore, examine, and meet the challenges of higher education the veterans face coming o NAU. The course focuses on enhancing critical thinking skills, enhancing writing skills, and connecting with the veteran community at NAU. This is a General Studies designated course in Social and Political Worlds category and is offered to Veterans, Active Duty, Guard and Reservists only.

Our Veteran Success Center here at Northern Arizona University host an array of events through out each semester. These include a host of BBQ’s, gatherings and outdoor events.

Yellow Ribbon eligibility criteria

The Yellow Ribbon program at NAU is used to pay for higher education non-resident tuition that is not covered by the post–9/11 GI Bill®. This includes dependents using transferred post–9/11 GI Bill®, or Fry Scholarship recipients. To verify eligibility, please review your certificate of eligibility.

Purple Heart Tuition Waiver

NAU is proud to be officially recognized as a Purple Heart School by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. As part of our commitment to serving our veterans and military affiliated families we manage the Purple Heart Tuition Waiver process for our students who qualify.

The Purple Heart Tuition Waiver agreement states:

“The Arizona board of regents, after verification by the Arizona department of veterans’ services that a person is a member or former member of the United States armed forces who received a purple heart citation, who was a resident of the state of Arizona or was stationed in Arizona at the time of the injury that resulted in the purple heart citation and whose disability rating determined by the United States department of veterans affairs is fifty percent or more, shall provide the person who otherwise meets the qualifications for admission with a tuition waiver scholarship at any university under the jurisdiction of the board.”

Arizona Spouse of Military Veterans Tuition Scholarship

In 2022, the Arizona State Legislature established the Spouse of Military Veterans Tuition Scholarship and appropriated $10 million to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), which has oversight of the program. The scholarship is a last-dollar scholarship intended to cover all tuition and fees. The first scholarship awards will take place in spring 2023. More information on this scholarship can be found in A.R.S. §15-1809.

Eligibility criteria

This scholarship is available to individuals who meet all of the following criteria:

• enrolled at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona, or an Arizona community college

• is a spouse of an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces

• classified as an in-state student

• applied for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

• enrolled in a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree program

• completed a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) release form

How to apply

NAU students who wish to apply for this program will need to fill out the online application form and submit a copy of the service member’s DD-214 (member 4) form and a copy of their marriage certificate as an attachment.

How does this program work with the GI Bill®?
