In-State tuition for Veterans and those utilizing VA Education Benefits

If you are a non-resident student or in the Western Undergraduate Exchange program (WUE), you may qualify for NAU’s in-state tuition rate as a military-connected student. If you are unsure of your residency status, please call 928-523-8387.

Northern Arizona University offers in-state tuition to honorably-discharged veterans who intend to become Arizona residents. The use of VA educational benefits is not a factor for this change.

All dependents utilizing VA Education Benefits are also eligible for in-state tuition.

The in-state tuition/Yellow Ribbon form must be completed as soon as the student is physically living in the state of Arizona. Please complete the form before the add/drop date of the given term.

If you do not live in Arizona or if you do not meet the criteria, you may still be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon program.

Apply for Federal Financial Aid:

  • Access the application: studentaid.gov
  • We advise students to apply for FAFSA even if you are not planning to accept loans.
  • You will need your or your parents’ tax return information for the previous two tax years.
  • You are NOT required to accept federal financial aid if you apply. Keep in mind, if you accept a financial aid student loan package, you will still be required to pay it back later.
  • Using VA education benefits does not affect your eligibility for Federal Student Aid. Students should apply for FAFSA every year they plan on attending school.
  • Through Federal Student Aid, you can receive but are not required to accept, federal grants, loans, and work-study awards.
  • When completing your FAFSA, funds from VA education benefits such as your monthly stipend do not count as income. They are considered “resources.” All other VA benefits such as compensation, pension, etc. are considered “non-taxable income” and must be documented as such on the form.
  • Many students that receive Federal Student Aid qualify for the Pell Grant, which is money students can accept to assist with school payments, and it is not paid back.
