{"id":8,"date":"2018-08-22T16:57:48","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T16:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.eduuniversity-ombuds-program\/faqs\/"},"modified":"2024-10-28T21:54:13","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T21:54:13","slug":"faqs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/university-ombuds-program\/faqs\/","title":{"rendered":"Frequently Asked Questions About the University Ombuds Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Frequently asked questions about the University Ombuds Program<\/h1>\n<h2><strong>What is an Ombuds?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first ombudsman was appointed by the Swedish Parliament in 1809 to act as a public\u00a0agent to assist citizens who had complaints against the executive bureaucracy of the Swedish government.\u00a0\u00a0This is what today would be known as a \u201cclassical\u201d ombuds.\u00a0An ombuds at NAU is an example of an \u201corganizational\u201d ombuds whose function is to serve as a trained neutral, confidential and independent facilitator to assist parties in resolving conflicts or issues which arise related to one\u2019s work within the University in an informal manner.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who may use the services of the NAU Ombuds Program?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Services offered by the Office of the University Ombuds are provided to NAU faculty, staff, and graduate students.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>For what reasons might a person contact the Ombuds Office?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While the reasons a person might contact the Ombuds Office vary widely, some of the most common include assistance or guidance to:\u00a0 resolve differences with another member of the faculty;\u00a0 understand how a University policy may be applicable to one\u2019s concerns; identify the options available for resolving differences; find needed information.\u00a0No matter the issue, the Ombuds will listen to a person\u2019s issues and concerns in a confidential environment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can the Ombuds be my advocate to manage\u00a0 a problem I am having?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An Ombuds cannot serve as an advocate or a spokesperson nor may an Ombuds appear before a faculty grievance committee or other such hearing. An ombuds may, however, assert the importance of a fair process and will assist individuals to identify their options when managing conflicts and concerns.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can I place the University on legal \u201cnotice\u201d by speaking about something with a member of the Ombuds Office?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No.\u00a0Communications with an ombuds are informal and off-the-record.\u00a0\u00a0Such communications do not constitute formal \u201cnotice\u201d to\u00a0Northern\u00a0Arizona University.\u00a0Other channels exist within the University for such notice to be given and will be discussed as appropriate or when requested.\u00a0(Please refer to the program \u201cCharter and Terms of Reference\u201d for a complete statement regarding \u201cnotice.\u201d)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>To whom does the Ombuds Office report?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Ombuds reports to the Provost through the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs for administrative, budgetary, and evaluation purposes. Information regarding particular cases is not shared.
