For most, exercise improves physical and mental health. It&#8217;s a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-754 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/male-students-working-out_29839083272_o-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/male-students-working-out_29839083272_o-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/male-students-working-out_29839083272_o-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/male-students-working-out_29839083272_o-600x600.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/>However, as someone who has worked with D1 collegiate athletes as a licensed and certified athletic trainer, I have also witnessed firsthand the underbelly of the fitness world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disordered exercise is often praised and glorified in our world, especially within the fitness realm (e.g., \u201cNo pain, no gain\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common issues I\u2019ve seen working with \u201cdedicated\u201d athletes over the years include: feeling anxious, distressed, or guilty if they miss a workout, working out even when very sick, skipping social events to get a run or lift in, experiencing stress fractures or hormone imbalances from over-exercise, using their sport\/activity of choice to punish themselves for eating certain foods, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what makes exercise healthy? And what moves exercise from a healthy outlet to a disordered compulsion you HAVE to do? Let\u2019s dive in!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does exercise feel like punishment? Something you do because the media tells you\u00a0 \u201cit\u2019s healthy\u201d? Or something you feel like you must do to burn off the extra calories you ate last night?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are signs of a healthy relationship with exercise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You engage in regular movement that you genuinely enjoy and find pleasure in doing (e.g., \u201cthe runner\u2019s high\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You look forward to engaging in your exercise activities each day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You listen to your body to know when to push harder and when to take a break\/do something lighter (e.g., play another game of basketball; go for a walk instead of weightlift)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You find that exercise helps you feel connected to both your mind and your body\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You finish your exercise every day feeling re-energized or rejuvenated, rather than exhausted or depleted<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel less stressed leading up to, during, and after your exercise bout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You exercise as a way to connect with other people and\/or to spend quality time with yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You exercise to celebrate your body and all it can do<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here are some thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that suggest you might have a more complicated relationship with exercise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You continue to workout even when you are sick or injured<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel guilty if you skip a day of exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You decline activities with friends (like biking or going for a walk) because they seem like a waste of time (e.g., it doesn\u2019t \u201ccount\u201d or isn\u2019t \u201cenough\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You increase the amount you exercise if you think you ate too much food or too many high-calorie foods (compensatory exercise)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel restless or irritable if you take a day off or try to cut back on exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You lie to friends and family about how much time you spend exercising<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You consistently exercise longer than you had originally intended<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel the need to work out longer\/harder in order to feel good<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You decline going out or engaging in other social activities in order to exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You fear that you if stop exercising, you won\u2019t be able to return to working out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You believe that you have to experience pain in order to gain benefits from exercise (\u201cNo pain, no gain\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You over-exercise in order to lose weight or to make changes to your weight\/body shape<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did any of these thoughts sound familiar?
