It\u2019s one of those things we do on autopilot. As we are going about our daily lives, our stomach rumbles, signaling the thought, \u201cI should probably eat something.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, we pick out our next meal or snack. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat sounds good?\u201d, \u201cWhat do I have time for?\u201d, or \u201cSweet, I have leftovers!\u201d And then we eat\u2026and we move on about our day and repeat the cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-square-image wp-image-707 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2895_1899_dining_20190807-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2895_1899_dining_20190807-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2895_1899_dining_20190807-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2895_1899_dining_20190807-600x600.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There is nothing wrong with that cycle. Heck, it is how we function and continue to survive as humans! But where is the fun, the pleasure, the JOY? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, food nourishes us. Yes, food helps us stay alive. Yes, food is fuel. But food also has a lot of perks\u2026and I don\u2019t just mean micronutrients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 3 reasons food is rad:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reason #1: Food is tied to experiences and memories.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that ice cream date you had with your grandpa when you were five? Isn\u2019t it interesting that something as silly as mint chocolate chip could bring you back to the laughter shared between you and loved one? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food connects us! If you celebrate any holidays, think about what stands out to you on those days. I\u2019m sure your mashed potatoes with homemade gravy is delightful\u2026but think about who you shared them with. They can be prepared a billion different ways\u2026talk about a super power! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooking unleashes the imagination and has given us countless ways to enjoy food. You don\u2019t have to like preparing food to experience the artistic and scientific innovations that come from cooking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today&#8217;s world, we can share this creativity with one another through so many channels &#8211; like food trucks, restaurants, cooking shows, and social media.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reason #3: Food is emotional.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be real, diet culture has totally tried to stomp on this idea by insisting eating is strictly related to morals and morals only. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-square-image wp-image-82 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2018\/06\/dub_noodle_cutting_20170824-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2018\/06\/dub_noodle_cutting_20170824-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2018\/06\/dub_noodle_cutting_20170824-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/174\/2018\/06\/dub_noodle_cutting_20170824-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The good news is that food is tied to our emotions and that\u2019s not a bad thing! Eating can bring genuine happiness to our lives and foster feelings of comfort, peace, and care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is amazing that food does so much for us. All of these things while also giving our bodies the nutrients we need to grow, develop, and live. How much cooler is it that eating goes way beyond that and fosters so many pleasurable, loving, and meaningful experiences?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I\u2019m nudging you to think about your own joys of eating. What are some positive memories you have surrounding food? Coffee date with your best friend, breakfast burrito after meeting your daughter for the first time, dinner at your favorite hometown restaurant on your first Winter break. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let those memories serve as a reminder that eating fulfills many needs, beyond just the physiological ones.
