{"id":48,"date":"2018-01-24T16:53:40","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T16:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/training.wp.nau.edu\/amanda-sandbox\/?page_id=48"},"modified":"2026-02-18T16:29:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:29:35","slug":"faculty-and-staff-reporting-best-practices","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/title-ix\/faculty-and-staff-reporting-best-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Reporting Best Practices for Faculty and Staff Employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Reporting best practices<\/h1>\n<h2>Best practices when working with an impacted party:<\/h2>\n<p>A faculty or staff member is often the first person at the university individuals will tell if they have experienced sex\/gender-based violence or another form of sex-based discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>An impacted party may share the information for a variety of reasons, such as:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Requesting a different seat in class<\/li>\n<li>Requesting a room change in the residence hall<\/li>\n<li>Explaining an absence or requesting an extension<\/li>\n<li>Asking not to be placed in a group with a certain student<\/li>\n<li>Stepping down from leadership in a student organization or within a department<\/li>\n<li>Missing work or asking for a different work location or assignment<\/li>\n<li>Complaining about a colleague&#8217;s behavior<\/li>\n<li>Explaining uncharacteristic behavior<\/li>\n<li>Requesting assistance or support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All faculty and staff should be able to identify Title IX-related concerns when they are raised by individuals to ensure that students and employees receive appropriate support, resource information and complaint options. Faculty and staff employees <strong>must<\/strong> submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?NorthernAZUniv&amp;layout_id=52\">Sexual Misconduct Form<\/a> to report any possible incident.\u00a0 Due to federal confidentiality protections, employees must not share the information received with anyone outside of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nau.edu\/titleix\">Office for the Resolution of Sexual Misconduct:\u00a0 Title IX Institutional Compliance, Prevention &amp; Response (ORSM),<\/a> without prior consultation with that office.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips to keep in mind:<\/h3>\n<h4>Do:<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>When possible, speak to the individual(s) in a comfortable location<\/li>\n<li>Share that you support the individual&#8217;s right to be treated seriously and with respect<\/li>\n<li>Be aware that the individual may be experiencing a wide range of emotions including shame, anger, fear, or denial<\/li>\n<li>Interrupt to inform the individual about your limits to confidentiality and that you only will report to those who have a need to know&#8211;ensuring their privacy<\/li>\n<li>Explain the option of discussing the incident with confidential resources such as Employee Assistance and Wellness (employees), <a href=\"tel:928-523-1552\">928-523-1552<\/a> or Counseling Services (students), <a href=\"tel:928-523-2131\">928-523-2131\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Remember that:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Impacted parties are not responsible for causing their assaults.<\/li>\n<li>People of all genders and gender identities can be impacted by sex\/gender-based violence.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid asking why questions. \u00a0It is not your role to determine what happened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Do not:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimize the situation<\/li>\n<li>Express personal biases<\/li>\n<li>Try to explain the differences between &#8220;sexual assault,&#8221; &#8220;rape,&#8221; &#8220;stalking&#8221; and other forms of sex\/gender violence.
