An individual may choose to report an incident of sex\/gender-based discrimination, including, but not limited to sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, or stalking using the Sexual Misconduct Report.<\/a> The university will process reports through Sexual Misconduct Policy using one of several procedures. These processes are administrative, internal, university processes. If desired, one may pursue concurrently an external, criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Individuals may choose to report as much or as little information as they wish when they file a report with a law enforcement agency and decide how involved they wish to be in prosecution. Depending on the location of the incident, a report may be made through:<\/p>\n

The police department will send a reporting officer to the individual’s location and ensure that they are in a safe place before asking for basic information about the incident. Often, the reporting officer will then have dispatch contact a victim\/witness advocate who will help the individual understand their options including a forensic exam or “rape kit” with NACASA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

If an individual talks to a counselor at Employee Assistance and Wellness, 928-523-1552<\/a> (employees) or Counseling Services<\/a>, 928-523-2131<\/a> (students), the information given will remain confidential in accordance with the law. The counseling relationship provides a safe space for impacted parties to talk about their situation and the resources available to them.<\/p>\n
Anonymous reporting<\/h5>\n
In an anonymous report, no names are required. No information is included that might identify the individual; an individual can choose how much information is shared.<\/p>\n
Students may use the Online Incident Report Form<\/a> to make an anonymous report.<\/p>\n
The Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) Anonymous Report Form<\/a> also can be used to make an anonymous report of sexual assault or other gender violence.<\/p>\n
If a member of the NAU community is in danger, NAUPD or the Office for the Resolution of Sexual Misconduct: Title IX Institutional Compliance, Prevention & Response (ORSM)<\/a> will notify the necessary departments with the information. Otherwise, the anonymous report is used to track possible patterns or areas that could pose a danger to the campus community.<\/p>\n

Information regarding support services that may be called<\/h2>\n
Victim Witness Advocate involvement<\/h3>\n
If desired, a Victim Witness Advocate can provide support to the survivor throughout the process. \u00a0The survivor will meet with an advocate to discuss their options and what to expect. Victim Witness Services can be reached at 928-856-7676<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Forensic exam<\/h3>\n
A forensic exam can be done up to 120 hours (around five days) after an incident and a police report is NOT necessary to obtain an exam. An exam is voluntary and can take up to six hours, and a victim may take a friend along for additional support. \u00a0A Forensic Nurse Examiner will ask questions about the incident and conduct a head-to-toe exam and detailed genital exam. The victim can stop the exam at any time.<\/p>\n
Recommendations:<\/h4>\n
\n
It is okay to eat or drink before your exam.<\/li>\n
It is recommended not to shower, bathe or wash any body parts until the exam.<\/li>\n
It is okay to go to the bathroom but minimize wiping with toilet paper.<\/li>\n
If you are wearing the clothes you had on during or immediately after the assault, it is recommended not to change your clothes.\n
\n
Law enforcement may collect your clothes into evidence prior to your exam.<\/li>\n
If not, please wear the clothes to your exam. \u00a0The nurse will collect your clothes into evidence and provide you with a new set of clothes.<\/li>\n
You may want to bring a change of clothes with you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
If you already have changed clothes or feel you need to change clothes before the exam, please bring the clothes worn during the assault to your exam even if they have been washed.<\/li>\n
If you already have done any of these actions prior to the exam, it is okay and you may still obtain an exam.<\/li>\n
