This presentation will introduce open pedagogy practices \u2013 what they are, what they do, and how to incorporate them into your courses. Attendees will learn how open pedagogy can help foster collaboration and promote learner agency by engaging students. Tools and resources for building open pedagogy practices and examples of open pedagogy projects will be shared.<\/p>\n
Jennifer Pate<\/strong> is the Open Education Resources & Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of North Alabama. She leads the campus OER initiative, which provides funding for faculty to find, assess, and develop OER for use in their courses. She leads OER campus workshops and works with individual faculty to develop OER and Open Pedagogy to complement their courses. We will also look at OER metafinders and review some resources designed to make finding OER easier.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n A break will occur from 10:25 – 10:30 am.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n Option 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n Using the ProQuest E-Books from the Library + OER Textbooks for classes<\/strong> <\/strong> In this session, we will explore the ProQuest Ebooks available from the Cline Library and OER textbooks through OER commons or the University of Minnesota. Participants should be able to navigate through the website, search for books for their classes, and potentially identify a strong textbook for their class. This is relevant for our faculty since it utilizes free resources from our library and other libraries.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Option 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n Using Perusall to Enhance OER and Engage Students Discover how to elevate your courses using Perusall, a free dynamic group annotation tool, alongside Open Educational Resources (OER). Explore Perusall’s interactive features, learn creative engagement strategies, and see how seamlessly it integrates with OER materials. Join us to explore Perusall’s potential for fostering collaborative learning environments, open pedagogy, and empowering student engagement in your classes.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n A break will occur from 10:55 – 11:00 am.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n Option 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n Using the Cathedral and the Bazaar to Unlock Better Design in OER<\/strong> An ongoing challenge in the development of Open Educational Resources is the under-utilization of many excellent OERs due to a lack of engaging design. In this presentation, I will highlight the impact of design on OER effectiveness, exploring how well-designed resources can foster better learning outcomes.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Option 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n OER in Support of Inclusive Excellence Students from minoritized populations–Indigenous, Black and Latine students, LGBTQIA students, students with disabilities, and students from low-SES families–are making up a larger and larger proportion of our student bodies. However, with rising costs of higher education, these students are finding higher education less and less accessible. In addition, these populations are still underrepresented in many course materials. This session will explore the role that OER can play in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion despite increasing political opposition to DEI initiatives.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n A break will occur from 11:25 – 11:30 am.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n Designing President Cruz Rivera’s EE 110 Course In this session, we will discuss the process of converting Dr. Cruz Rivera’s EE-110 course to incorporate an OER text developed by a faculty member at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
