Scientists at Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, the Arizona Geological Survey at the University of Arizona, and the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder have been awarded almost $2 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a virtual reality teaching tool called Polar Explorer. Dr. Deborah Huntzinger in the School of Earth and Sustainability is one of the… Read more
Past & Present Climate Change
Congrats to CSS grad student Maya Shimoni for an award at the confluence of science and art!
Climate Sciences and Solutions MS student Maya Shimoni won an award for her poster at the Arizona Imaging and Microanalysis Society (AIMS) this spring. Maya has been working in a microscopy lab to create very high-quality images of insects that allow for improved species identification. This identification work improves the ability of scientists to monitor changing plant-insect interactions under climate change, but also leads to some amazing imagery! Maya made… Read more

Can forest management save us from global warming?

SES climate scientist Deborah Huntzinger recently published a paper in Science about the potential for forests to absorb our excess greenhouse gas emissions. You can learn more about challenges and solutions from her interviews with NAU News and the AZ Daily Sun.
SES paleoclimatologists author major new study showing global warming has upended 6,500 years of cooling

Learn how School of Earth and Sustainability climate scientists determined how global warming is a major new shift in long-term climate trends. Their findings were published in a major new study out this month. Check out the VERY cool infographic and NAU news story, or go straight to the open access paper.
Ellie Broadman is the lead author on a new paper linking sea ice and climate records in the arctic. “Coupled impacts of sea ice variability and North Pacific atmospheric circulation on Holocene hydroclimate in Arctic Alaska,” was recently published in
