{"id":4458,"date":"2026-05-13T18:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/music\/?page_id=4458"},"modified":"2026-06-30T17:26:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T17:26:12","slug":"concerto-competition-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/school-music\/concerto-competition-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerto Competition Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Concerto Competition Guidelines<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Application Deadline:<\/strong> Completed applications due on <strong>Friday, November 6, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Send as a PDF file to <a href=\"mailto:vlad.vizireanu@nau.edu\">Dr. Vlad Vizireanu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preliminaries<\/strong> will be scheduled by area coordinators on or before <strong>December 11, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules and Eligibility:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU, and must be studying privately with an NAU music faculty member, at the time of the competition and the performance.<\/li>\n<li>Past winners are ineligible.<\/li>\n<li>The work to be performed, (one movement of a standard concerto, or an entire concerto\/concert piece), shall not exceed 15 minutes in duration for the Preliminary Round. Extensions of 25 minutes will be made at Dr. Vizireanu\u2019s discretion for the Final Round.<\/li>\n<li>All works to be performed must be formally approved by the Area Head in advance of the application deadline. (Please see list of ineligible pieces below)<\/li>\n<li>The work must have a published score and orchestral parts.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants wishing to perform a non-standard concerto or concert piece are required to provide the Director of Orchestras with a score and recording of the work in advance of the application deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Any alterations to the piece, including key changes or cuts, must be approved by the Director of Orchestras in advance of the application deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Memorization is not required for the Preliminaries in December, but is required for the Finals in January.<\/li>\n<li>Accompanists are required for both the Final and Preliminary rounds.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Finalists:<\/h2>\n<p>Each area will name a maximum of two (2) finalists and one (1) alternate to compete in the final competition on <strong>Saturday, January 23, 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Woodwinds<\/li>\n<li>Brass<\/li>\n<li>Strings<\/li>\n<li>Percussion, Piano, &amp; Classical guitar<\/li>\n<li>Voice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finalist must furnish the adjudicating committee with three copies of the music to be performed.<\/p>\n<p>Memorization is required for the final round of the competition and the performance.<\/p>\n<h2>Winners:<\/h2>\n<p>The committee will choose two unranked winners and two alternates.
