{"id":4458,"date":"2026-05-13T18:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/music\/?page_id=4458"},"modified":"2026-06-08T15:22:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T15:22:55","slug":"concerto-competition-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/school-music\/concerto-competition-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerto Competition Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Concerto Competition Guidelines<\/h1>\n<p>Application Deadline: Completed applications due on Friday, November 3.<\/p>\n<p>Deliver to the Band &amp; Orchestra Office (room 180).<\/p>\n<p>Preliminaries will be scheduled by area coordinators on or before December 10.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules and Eligibility:<\/h2>\n<p>a. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at NAU, and must be studying privately with an NAU music faculty member, at the time of the competition and the performance.<\/p>\n<p>b. Past winners are ineligible.<\/p>\n<p>c. The work to be performed, (one movement of a standard concerto, or an entire concerto\/concert piece), shall not exceed 15 minutes in duration.<\/p>\n<p>d. All works to be performed must be formally approved by the Director of Orchestras in advance of the application deadline. (Please see list of ineligible pieces below)<\/p>\n<p>e. The work must have a published score and orchestral parts.<\/p>\n<p>f. Applicants wishing to perform a non-standard concerto or concert piece are required to provide the Director of Orchestras with a score and recording of the work in advance of the application deadline.<\/p>\n<p>g. Any alterations to the piece, including key changes or cuts, must be approved by the Director of Orchestras in advance of the application deadline.<\/p>\n<p>h. Memorization is not required for the Preliminaries in December, but is required for the Finals in January.<\/p>\n<p>i. Accompanists are required for both the Final and Preliminary rounds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Finalists:<\/h2>\n<p>Each area will name a maximum of two (2) finalists and one (1) alternate to compete in the final competition in January.<\/p>\n<p>a. Woodwinds<\/p>\n<p>b. Brass<\/p>\n<p>c. Strings<\/p>\n<p>d. Percussion, Piano, &amp; Classical guitar<\/p>\n<p>e. Voice<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finalist must furnish the adjudicating committee with three copies of the music to be performed.<\/p>\n<p>Memorization is required for the final round of the competition and the performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Winners:<\/h2>\n<p>The committee will choose two unranked winners and two alternates. The performance will take place at 3:00pm on Sunday, May 5, in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>PIECES THAT ARE NOT ELIGIBLE:<\/h3>\n<p>2019 Tomasi \u2013 Saxophone Concerto, mvt. Final Giration<\/p>\n<p>2019 Walton \u2013 Viola Concerto, mvts. 1-2<\/p>\n<p>2020 Strauss \u2013 Duet Concertino for Bassoon and Clarinet, mvt. 1<\/p>\n<p>2020 Gliere \u2013 Horn Concerto, mvt. 1<\/p>\n<p>2021 Ibert &#8212; Concertino Da Camera for Saxophone and Orchestra<\/p>\n<p>2021 Bottesini &#8212; Concerto in B minor for String Bass and Orchestra<\/p>\n<p>2022 Elgar&#8211; Cello Concerto, mvt. 4<\/p>\n<p>2022 Saint-Saens &#8212; Piano Concerto No. 2, mvt 1<\/p>\n<p>2023 Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 2, mvt. 1<\/p>\n<p>2023 Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, mvt. 1<\/p>\n<p>2023 Lierberman Concerto for Piccolo<\/p>\n<p>2023 Schumann Konzertstuck for 4 Horns, mvt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Concerto Competition Guidelines Application Deadline: Completed applications due on Friday, November 3.
