\nJazz Ensemble Auditions<\/h1>\n

\"Jazz<\/p>\n

Each ensemble rehearses throughout the semester and performs concerts on campus as well as off-campus.<\/p>\n

A number of guest artist clinicians work with students each semester in masterclasses, private lessons, and side-by-side performances.<\/p>\n

Performance opportunities include:<\/h2>\n

Jazz Ensemble One (Big Band)<\/h3>\n

MUP 170-14, 270-14, 370-14, 470-14, 670-14<\/p>\n

Tues\/Thurs. 5:00-6:30pm<\/p>\n

Jazz Ensemble II (big band)<\/h3>\n

MUP 170-15, 270-15, 370-15, 470-15, 670-15<\/p>\n

Tues\/Thurs. 3:30-4:45pm<\/p>\n

Multiple Jazz Combos<\/h3>\n

Schedule TBD based on student\/instructor availability<\/p>\n

(1 90-min. rehearsal per week)<\/p>\n

We also offer jazz improvisation courses.<\/h4>\n

Jazz Improv I (MUP 241) is offered in the Fall semester and is open to all students (prior music theory knowledge required).<\/p>\n

\"Two<\/h2>\n

Ensemble auditions will take place on Tuesday, August 26th, 3:00-7:00pm\u00a0in the<\/h2>\n

Performing and Fine Arts Building (37A), rm. 139.<\/h2>\n

Audition sign-ups will be posted on Monday, August 18th on the Jazz Studies bulletin board outside Rm. 139.<\/p>\n

Please be sure to download the applicable packet for your instrument, the accompaniment track for Have You Met Miss Jones<\/em>? and fill out the included Student Information Form.<\/p>\n

Audition materials<\/h2>\n

To access the audition materials for this upcoming semester, please complete the following steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Self-enroll<\/a>\u00a0in the Canvas course \u201cEnsemble Placement Reference\u201d.<\/li>\n
  2. Log into\u00a0Canvas<\/a>\u00a0by using your NAU ID.<\/li>\n
  3. On the\u00a0Ensemble Placement Reference<\/a>\u00a0home page, you can now view and download your instrument\u2019s audition excerpt as a PDF.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/h2>\n

    During your audition, you will:<\/h2>\n

    1. Perform the etude in your instrument’s packet, as you would in a big band setting.<\/p>\n

    2. Interpret a melody\u00a0and (optionally) improvise 1-2 choruses.<\/p>\n

    LEAD TRUMPET: Perform the\u00a0 lead trumpet excerpt found in your packet instead of the regular excerpt<\/p>\n

    RHYTHM SECTION: Perform at least one additional chorus of accompaniment (i.e. walking bass line, comping for guitar\/piano)<\/p>\n

    DRUMS: play the excerpt in your packet and demonstrate a variety of feels \/ tempos as requested in the audition.<\/p>\n

    Be sure to read all instructions.<\/strong><\/p>\n
