Our undergrads are very active with Green NAU and campus sustainability, and several were recognized with Sustainability<\/strong> Leadership Awards <\/b>from the NAU Environmental Caucus<\/a><\/span>\u00a0–<\/b> Taryn Bell<\/strong> (ENV),\u00a0 Natalie Pierson<\/strong> (ESS), and Paige Strickland<\/strong> (ESS).<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduate students in all our programs were also supported this year by generous alumni, donors, and prestigious national fellowships. Students in Environmental Sciences (ESP), Climate Sciences and Solutions (CSS), Geology (GLG), and our PhD program in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability (ESES) all achieved great things!<\/p>\n

Iris Garthwaite<\/b>, a graduating student in our Environmental Sciences & Policy MS program, was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship <\/strong>AND the NAU Presidential Fellowship\u00a0<\/strong>to continue on to a PhD.<\/p>\n

The Wyss Scholars Program for the Conservation of the American West<\/b> selected Sarah Colombo<\/strong> (ESP) and Yazhmin Dozal<\/strong> (ESP) as this year’s scholars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At our annual\u00a0Graduate Research Symposium <\/strong>several students were recognized for their terrific science communication. Valeria Cortes Rivas<\/strong> (ESES) was awarded the Montgomery Prize<\/b>, and <\/span>Alexis Riche<\/strong> (ESES) and Kelsey Brennan<\/strong> (GLG) won 3 Minute Research Presentation Awards<\/b>. First year students presented posters on their proposed research, and awards went to<\/span>\u00a0Susan Wood<\/strong> (ESP), Samantha Barnett<\/strong> (GLG), and Frank Telles<\/strong> (ESES PhD).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kelcie Kraft<\/strong> (CSS) was recognized with a<\/span>\u00a0Sustainability Leadership Award<\/b> from the NAU Environmental Caucus<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Congratulations to Dr. N<\/strong>ick McKay<\/strong> for winning the <\/span>American Quaternary Association<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Eric Grimm Award for Excellence in Open Science and Data Stewardship.\u00a0 This new award recognizes an outstanding scientist with demonstrated excellence in research and an exemplary commitment to advancing open science. Two of our faculty this year also earned Sustainability Leadership Awards<\/strong> from the NAU Environmental Caucus<\/a> – congrats to Dr. Erik Nielson<\/strong> (NAU Leadership) and Dr. Denielle Perry<\/strong> (Green Fund Project of the Year and Faculty of the Year).<\/span><\/p>\n

Alumni Awards<\/h3>\n

Two of our School’s fantastic alumni were also honored this year with Sustainability Leadership Awards<\/strong> from the NAU Environmental Caucus<\/a><\/span>. <\/b>Dara Marks Marino<\/strong> (MS Climate Sciences and Solutions) was<\/span> instrumental in Flagstaff Climate Emergency declaration<\/a>, helping shape NAUs climate action plan and engaging students in climate action. Kevin Ordean <\/strong>(BA Environmental and Sustainability Studies)<\/span> led entrepreneurial efforts for forest restoration under 4FRI<\/a> (Four Forest Restoration Initiative).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
