All NAU Political Science students are welcome to join the lab. The RDY Lab was created to give motivated students the opportunity to get hands on experience doing quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Ideally, the lab is looking for sophomore-level students so that you have enough time to develop your skills and interests under the guidance of the lab.<\/p>\n
The lab has a rotation of data collection research projects<\/a> in the field, providing up to date survey data on several political and social issues. The lab is also a working research hub modeled after real-world professional consultant services that our Director provides in the private sector. If you are curious what a professional consultant does, you can learn about this through the lab, as well.<\/p>\n Joining the lab will give you access to real life data used in the commercial and academic worlds. The lab regularly participates in collaborative survey research projects with academics around the country and our director works with consultants that advises non-profit organizations, education campaigns, and advocacy groups. The topics range the political, social, and economic landscape. The lab gives you the infrastructure needed to use this data to work on your own research skills. Every student who works with the lab will develop the basic skills to do quantitative research and communicate their research findings in an academic and public-intellectual setting. Each lab researcher will learn how to use R\/RStudio, Stata, LaTeX, and Zotero by training with Dr. Stephen Nuño and through collaboration with the other student researchers.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n Basic skills in quantitative analysis and writing is a must, but once you start developing those skills, you can develop other skills through the lab, including data visualization, social media, public communications, and fundraising. While everyone needs to learn the basics of quantitative analysis, the lab is in constant need of those with specialized skills using other programs, such as WordPress, Microsoft Power BI, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Python, CapCut, and Canva.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n <\/p>\n\n The lab has limited opportunities for paid internships, but there are a number of ways to apply for funding through scholarships, grants, and sponsorships by using your affiliation with the lab.\u00a0 These opportunities are competitive, but if you reach out to the lab we can work together to build a proposal that will put you in a good position to get the award. These opportunities take planning, coordination, and research, so please contact the lab as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n The intent of the Hooper Undergraduate Research Award<\/a> (HURA) is to encourage greater participation of undergraduate students from all disciplines in research, scholarly, and creative activities supervised by a faculty mentor.<\/p>\n Applications are accepted annually in February 1 – March 1 of each year.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n The Mentored Research Grant<\/a> will provide up to $5,000 to support student research with the scope of Arizona’s Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF). Students are not eligible to apply, but the lab can apply for funding to support you if you satisfy the requirements above. Email the lab at RDY_Research@nau.edu<\/a> for information.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n The Undergraduate Symposium<\/a> is a wonderful place to network with your peers, faculty, and professionals in your field. Many people from industry visit the event looking for potential candidates, so it could lead to your next big opportunity. The lab will work with you to put together a presentation to highlight your skills to potential employers and to graduate programs.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n The Maxwell-Lutz Community Impact Award<\/a> is an interdisciplinary research award jointly sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences (CEFNS), and the Steve Sanghi College of Engineering (SCE).
