TRIF Research Aid (TRA) Grant
TRIF Research Aid (TRA) Grant will provide up to $5,000 to support research with the scope of Arizona’s Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF), and is designed to help recipients both pursue research within this program and as an aid during the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are accepted anytime after June 15, 2021 and will be considered on a monthly basis while the submission window is open. The TRA submission window closes at 5 p.m. on December 15, 2021.
The Office of the Vice President for Research announces the TRIF Research Aid (TRA) Grant as a limited-term intramural support award for FY2022. The TRA program supports research with the scope of Arizona’s Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF), and is designed to help recipients both pursue research within this program and as an aid during the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible proposals must clearly delineate how the proposed work is related to one or more of four TRIF initiatives:
• Water, Environment, and Energy Solutions (WEES)
• Improving Health (iHealth)
• National Security Systems
• Exploring Planetary Systems
Full-time tenured/tenure track faculty members across all NAU colleges are eligible to serve as a PI on TRA proposals. Faculty members who are both (1) NAU regular employees (i.e., benefit-eligible) and (2) eligible to serve as Principal Investigators/ Project Directors on extramural grants may serve as co-PIs on TRA proposals.
Professors of Practice are eligible to apply to this program. Research Track faculty members are also eligible to be principal investigators on proposals to this program if they have a tenure faculty co-investigator substantively involved as a partner in the proposed research and can demonstrate in the proposal available, non-committed effort.

Funds are awarded for use anytime after July 1, 2022 and funds must be expended by the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2022. Extensions of TRA funding beyond this date will not be possible.
Costs of the following may be supported via TRIF Research Aid program awards Accordion Closed
- Hourly wages for graduate or undergraduate research assistants
- Laboratory consumables
- Small research equipment
- Software licenses used primarily for research
Costs of the following may NOT be supported via TRIF Research Aid program awards Accordion Closed
- Salary for faculty or staff
- Buy-out of teaching duties
- Renovations or building modifications
- Professional memberships
- Travel costs
All expenditures are subject to standard rules provided by NAU and ABOR.

Applications for TRA funding must be submitted electronically. The Face Page and Narrative Template should be converted into a single PDF document and emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Selection criteria Accordion Closed
Clear delineation of how the proposed work is within the scope of one or more TRIF initiatives is a requirement.
Priority will be given to meritorious proposals most clearly demonstrating that:
- Involvement of student support in proposed work
- Completion of the proposed work will directly impact a planned proposal submission to one or more specified extramural grant opportunities
- Completion of the proposed work will impact the disclosure/development of patentable/licensable technology
