General rules for Intramural Funding opportunities
Purpose
Intramural award programs overseen by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) support the priorities of the research-based initiatives of the voter approved Technology Research Initiative Fund (TRIF) program in the state of Arizona. The intramural programs enable research goals of individual investigators, students, and collaborative groups while allowing NAU to successfully deliver upon the goals of the TRIF program, namely technological and research innovation and training the next generation of the research workforce.
Eligibility
- All intramural programs overseen by the OVPR are open to individuals who qualify as a Principal Investigator (PI) across all NAU colleges.
- Faculty members who are both (1) NAU regular employees (i.e., benefit eligible) and (2) hold positions deemed to be automatically eligible to serve as Principal Investigators/Project Directors on extramural grants (as per the NAU PI Eligibility policy) may serve as PI or co-PIs on intramural proposals.
- Part-time employees, adjunct or affiliate faculty, and other individuals who require approval to serve as PI on extramural grants are not eligible to serve as PI or co-PIs on intramural proposals.
- Research track faculty are eligible to be PIs on intramural proposals if they can demonstrate available, non-committed effort in the proposal.
- Investigators may apply to more than one intramural program in a given year, but may not accept more than one intramural award during this timeframe should multiple successful applications be identified upon review. Excluded from this rule are awards made to investigators in programs focused on student support (Student Mentored Research Traineeship, Student Veteran Research Opportunity, Support for Graduate Students) or honors from the Research and Creative Activity awards program.
Award information Accordion Closed
- The intramural programs provide funding to support research projects, experiential learning activities for students, and instrumentation. Specific information for each award is found on the associated program page.
- Matching contributions are not required for any intramural program unless the funding request in the application exceeds the maximum amount allowed by the program.
- While not required, proposals that demonstrate commitment from other units through provision of a matching contribution are encouraged.
- Individual selection committees for intramural programs reserve the right to prioritize requests where limited other sources of funding are available to support the proposed effort or request.
Award period Accordion Closed
All awards are for a 12 month period, initiated after award acceptance, unless otherwise stated within the program.

Mechanism of award Accordion Closed
Purchases of goods and services (including payroll expenses) for all intramural projects will be made through the awardee’s department business office. The department business officer will subsequently submit a transfer request to the Intramural Program Coordinator, who will arrange to reimburse the department for the expense.
Regulatory assurances and compliance Accordion Closed
Projects involving the use of human subjects, vertebrate animals, biohazardous materials/recombinant DNA, or radioactive materials/X-rays must be reviewed by the appropriate review committee or board to ensure compliance with federal regulations and with guidelines established in the NAU Faculty Handbook.
Projects involving the use of export controlled material/technology, hazardous chemicals or field work may also require training and/or review. For forms or more information, see Environmental Health and Safety.
If you need assistance with any assurance and compliance issues, contact the Office of the Vice President for Research at ovpr@nau.edu. Awards cannot be activated until all necessary regulatory compliance approvals have been received.
