An addressable PUF generator (APG) comprises an array of PUFs and receives a user identification and password from the distributed peripheral device. The user identification and password comprise a challenge that is recognized as ternary data. Based on a predetermined threshold, the APG determines a challenge-response rate error by comparing ternary data.            <p>An authentication protocol based on an APG allows for the protection of a network having distributed peripherals, such as smartphones and the Internet of Things. This protection does not require the storage of a database, passwords, or secret keys. Ternary states enhance APG, strengthening the authentication protocol through increased entropy (i.e., randomness rate).
