Faculty are required to offer students an excuse from otherwise required academic activities when a valid IE is approved by the appropriate administrative official and presented to faculty within prescribed timelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Approval process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Details about our policy and process can be found in Northern Arizona University\u2019s University Policy Library entry on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/university-policy-library\/student-institutional-excuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Institutional Excuses<\/a>. To ensure timely consideration, it is important that students review this policy before submitting a request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students requesting approval for any IE must complete and submit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?NorthernAZUniv&amp;layout_id=100\">online request form<\/a>; more detailed instructions are provided as part of this form. To check on the status of a submitted request, please email the&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:DeanofStudents@nau.edu\" data-type=\"mailto\" data-id=\"mailto:DeanofStudents@nau.edu\">Office of the Dean of Students<\/a>&nbsp;or call <a href=\"tel:9285235181\">928-523-5181<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-affd4345-c219-4790-b045-dfc38dd23645\">Institutional Excuse types<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-006a7327-e2ff-4eaf-8240-640549ad88d9\">Academic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-aa874a87-dd08-4366-b75f-e022a1a584ee\">Approved by the dean (or designee) of the relevant academic college, the academic Student Institutional Excuse may be issued to students who participate in anticipated i) curriculum-based, scheduled course activities outside of a normal class meeting time;
