Work typically consists of patrol, preliminary investigations and traffic enforcement duties. Patrol may be performed in cars, on motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot. An officer must be able to act without direct supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. This work requires occasional physical exertion under adverse circumstances and varying climatic conditions. A police officer’s duties may involve an element of personal danger. Police officers must accept work assignments on rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. A police officer must possess excellent communication skills. A working knowledge of computers and word processing is preferred.<\/p>\n Minimum Requirements<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n In order to become a Northern Arizona University police officer you must be a person of excellent character. You must be willing to accept responsibility and serve in a leadership role. You must be mature and willing to work in a service-oriented team environment. Psychological Screening<\/div>\nIf the selected candidate is not currently an Arizona P.O.S.T. certified police officer, the candidate must attend and successfully complete an Arizona P.O.S.T. approved Basic Training Academy. The Basic Training academy is approximately 22 weeks long. The police officer candidate must maintain a passing grade of 70% to remain in the Academy. In addition, the candidate must successfully complete a 14-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program. The FTO program includes street experience with ongoing evaluation by police training officers. In order to attain regular status, the police officer candidate must successfully complete a 12-month probationary period that begins upon graduation of the police academy.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
