Work typically consists of patrol, preliminary investigations and traffic enforcement duties. Patrol may be performed in cars, on motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot. An officer must be able to act without direct supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. This work requires occasional physical exertion under adverse circumstances and varying climatic conditions. A police officer&#8217;s duties may involve an element of personal danger. Police officers must accept work assignments on rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. A police officer must possess excellent communication skills. A working knowledge of computers and word processing is preferred.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Minimum Requirements<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to become a Northern Arizona University police officer you must be a person of excellent character. You must be willing to accept responsibility and serve in a leadership role. You must be mature and willing to work in a service-oriented team environment. In addition, you must meet the following criteria, which can also found in depth at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azsos.gov\/public_services\/Title_13\/13-04.pdf\">Arizona Administrative Code .<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must be 21 years or older upon graduation from the academy<\/li>\n<li>You must be a United States citizen<\/li>\n<li>Have a high school diploma or equivalent<\/li>\n<li>Undergo a complete background investigation<\/li>\n<li>Undergo a medical examination<\/li>\n<li>Undergo a polygraph examination<\/li>\n<li>No significant criminal history<\/li>\n<li>No drug abuse history\n<ul>\n<li>Not have illegally, as defined in R13-4-101, possessed or used marijuana for any purpose within the past six months<\/li>\n<li>Not have illegally, as defined in R13-4-101, possessed, produced, cultivated, or transported marijuana for sale or sold marijuana<\/li>\n<li>Not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale a dangerous drug or narcotic<\/li>\n<li>Not have illegally used a dangerous drug or narcotic, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years<\/li>\n<li>Not have a pattern of abuse of prescription medication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A good driving record<\/li>\n<li>Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona driver&#8217;s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Selection Process<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Northern Arizona University Police Department is committed to hiring high quality individuals. The progressive hiring process is extensive and rigorous, consisting of eight separate components:<\/p>\n<div>1. \u00a0Written Examination (must be passed at 70%)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2. \u00a0Physical Fitness Familiarization &#8211; you must participate in this testing component to continue in the selection process.\u00a0 You must pass these standards before hire.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<table id=\"tablepress-2\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-2\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Percentile<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">1.5 Mile Run <br \/>\nMin\/Sec<\/th><th class=\"column-3\">One Minute Sit-Ups<\/th><th class=\"column-4\">One Minute Push-Ups<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">40th<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">15:20<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">31<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">29<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-2 from cache --><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>3. Oral Board (must be passed at 70%)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>4. Interview with Command Staff<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>5. Background Investigation<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>6. Polygraph Examination<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>7. Psychological Screening<\/div>\n<p>8. Medical Examination (includes drug screening)<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Training Program<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>If the selected candidate is not currently an Arizona P.O.S.T. certified police officer, the candidate must attend and successfully complete an Arizona P.O.S.T. approved Basic Training Academy. The Basic Training academy is approximately 22 weeks long. The police officer candidate must maintain a passing grade of 70% to remain in the Academy. In addition, the candidate must successfully complete a 14-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program. The FTO program includes street experience with ongoing evaluation by police training officers.
