Understanding Law Enforcement Roles on the NAU Campus<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The following information is provided to clarify the role of the Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) and the authority of non\u2011campus law enforcement agencies when they operate on campus.<\/p>\n

NAUPD is committed to serving the entire NAU community with professionalism, respect, and compassion.<\/p>\n

Where We Have Authority<\/strong><\/h5>\n
    \n
  • NAUPD officers are state\u2011certified peace officers with authority both on and off the NAU campus.<\/li>\n
  • Our primary jurisdiction is the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    What We Enforce<\/strong><\/h5>\n
      \n
    • Arizona state laws<\/li>\n
    • Campus safety and security requirements<\/li>\n
    • Assistance with serious criminal investigations in coordination with other agencies<\/li>\n
    • NAU Student Code of Conduct<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      What We Do Not Enforce<\/strong><\/h5>\n

      • City of Flagstaff ordinances<\/li>\n
      • Coconino County ordinances<\/li>\n
      • Federal immigration laws<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Non-Campus Law Enforcement Agencies on Campus<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        Their Authority<\/strong><\/h5>\n
          \n
        • Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies do have legal authority to operate on campus.<\/li>\n
        • NAUPD cannot interfere with the lawful operations of these agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          When They Assist NAUPD<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            \n
          • Special events<\/li>\n
          • Critical incidents<\/li>\n
          • Situations requiring additional personnel or specialized resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            Officer Identification and Safety<\/strong><\/h5>\n
              \n
            • NAUPD officers are required to identify themselves while performing their duties.<\/li>\n
            • NAUPD officers are not permitted to wear full face coverings.<\/li>\n
            • Uniforms will clearly display NAUPD identification.<\/li>\n
            • Anyone claiming to be an NAUPD officer without proper identification should be reported immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
