{"id":998,"date":"2012-06-18T10:12:09","date_gmt":"2012-06-18T17:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=998"},"modified":"2013-12-10T15:49:31","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T22:49:31","slug":"nau-names-arizona-assistant-as-head-womens-basketball-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-names-arizona-assistant-as-head-womens-basketball-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU names Arizona assistant as head women\u2019s basketball coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><strong>Sue Darling<\/strong><\/strong>, an assistant coach at the University of Arizona for the last four seasons, has been selected as NAU\u2019s head coach for women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa Campos<\/strong>, vice president for Intercollegiate Athletics, announced the selection today, pending approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to have an experienced coach with deep ties in Arizona to lead our women\u2019s basketball program,\u201d Campos said. \u201cSue Darling is a high-energy, dedicated coach who wants to develop a program that will represent NAU and Flagstaff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darling has 27 years\u2019 experience coaching basketball, including roles as an assistant coach at both the UA and Arizona State University and three years as the head coach at the Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSue Darling is a great addition to Northern Arizona University\u2019s athletics program,\u201d said NAU President <strong>John Haeger<\/strong>. \u201cShe brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm that will invigorate the women\u2019s basketball program and engage our students, alumni and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darling served as offensive coordinator and directed player and team development at UA under women\u2019s basketball coach Niya Butts. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Darling also was instrumental in recruiting, scouting, marketing and community relations.<\/p>\n<p>Darling said she looks forward to joining the coaching staff and working with student athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAU is a special place and I am thrilled to be here,\u201d Darling said.\u00a0\u201cDr. Haeger has reinvigorated NAU athletics with his vision and commitment, and I look forward to making NAU women\u2019s basketball a source of great pride and tradition for us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As offensive coordinator for the Wildcats, Darling was responsible for offensive planning and strategy, offensive instruction and game-time decisions. During the 2010-11 season, Arizona ranked No. 28 nationally and No. 3 in the Pac-10 in scoring offense.<\/p>\n<p>Darling\u2019s experience includes leading teams at the high school, junior college, university and professional level.
