Franke College of Business<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ken Lorek<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ernest McFarland Endowed Chair <\/strong>College of Education<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not yet filled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>A $1.5 million endowment gift from alumna Marcey Olajos has created the Charles Olajos and Ted Goslow Chair of Environmental Science and Policy for the Southwest at Northern Arizona University.<\/p>\n<p>The chair, to support interdisciplinary work linking scientific research and public policy, will be housed initially in NAU&#8217;s College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/CEFNS\/NATSCI\/SESES\/Faculty\/Sisk\/\"><strong>Tom Sisk<\/strong><\/a>, professor of ecology and founder of the university&#8217;s Lab of Landscape Ecology and Conservation Biology, is the first holder. It is the sixth endowed chair at NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Olajos-Goslow Chair represents the commitment that individuals such as Marcey have to sustainability and policy in the Southwest,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Paul Jagodzinski<\/strong>, dean of the College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences. \u201cIt also reflects the commitment NAU has to these issues and interests.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Because of NAU\u2019s significant interest in ecology and sustainability, \u201cpeople around the country know about us,\u201d Jagodzinski said. \u201cMarcey\u2019s idea is that we\u2019re not just doing academic research on campus, but we\u2019re also informing the public and helping to guide the development of sound policy. Her interests fit very well with the interests of our college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olajos said she feels fortunate in being able to support this position. \u201cIt acts as the cornerstone for an important, far-reaching program at NAU,\u201d she said. \u201cIn creating this chair, the university will have the opportunity to become a center for research and policy in this geographical area. I have a strong connection to the Colorado Plateau and NAU, so it is very exciting to be part of a program which will enhance both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The gift honors Olajos\u2019 father, Charles, and former NAU professor\u00a0<strong>Ted Goslow<\/strong>, remembered by Olajos for his inspired teaching and commitment to students. It will generate about $60,000 a year to support the research, education and outreach. It also will be matched dollar for dollar by the state\u2019s Eminent Scholars Program.<\/p>\n<p>Sisk, noting NAU\u2019s \u201clong history of excellence in ecology and environmental conservation,\u201d said that the endowment will help link those strengths to \u201cnew and ongoing efforts to safeguard our land, water, and natural resources during this period of rapid environmental change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olajos, who graduated from NAU with a degree in biology, spent her career in medical research and is active with numerous conservation and education organizations, including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wyssfoundation.org\/\">Wyss Foundation<\/a>, which since 2008, has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-graduate-students-get-funding-to-become-environmental-leaders-2\/\">supported select NAU graduate students<\/a>\u00a0through the Wyss Scholars Program for the Conservation of the American West.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/1-5-million-gift-endows-chair-for-environmental-science-policy\/\">Endowed chairs at NAU Charles Olajos and Ted Goslow Endowed Chair College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences Tom Sisk E.
