{"id":9602,"date":"2011-08-19T11:19:50","date_gmt":"2011-08-19T18:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=9602"},"modified":"2012-12-21T11:54:53","modified_gmt":"2012-12-21T18:54:53","slug":"in-the-spotlight-aug-19-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-aug-19-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: Aug. 19, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Kudos to these faculty, staff and students<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<br \/>\nE-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jeffrey Brian Downard<\/strong>, associate professor of philosophy, completed a summer-long Visiting Erskine Fellowship at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.\u00a0During his fellowship, Downard gave lectures in the philosophy program.\u00a0Only those academics who are already advanced in the learning of their subject are invited to be Visiting Fellows.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daniel Laughlin<\/strong>, who recently earned his doctoral degree from NAU&#8217;s School of Forestry, published the article, \u201cNitrification Is Linked To Dominant Leaf Traits Rather Than Functional Diversity,\u201d which was selected as Editor\u2019s Choice for the\u00a0<em>Journal of Ecology<\/em>\u2019s September issue.\u00a0 The article examines how plant communities in the ponderosa pine forests of northern Arizona affect ecosystem processes.Laughlin completed most of the research described in his paper while he finished his doctorate and worked at NAU\u2019s Ecological Restoration Institute.
