(NAU. .ARC.1950-3-7b).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let\u00a0<em>Inside NAU<\/em>\u00a0take you back in time this summer with tidbits of university history.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Mother&#8217;s cooking<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Known to generations of students as &#8220;Mother&#8221; Hanley,\u00a0<strong>Margret Hanley<\/strong>, pictured center, moved from Colorado in 1912 at age 40 to run the Northern Arizona Normal School&#8217;s (<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=8811\" target=\"_blank\">now NAU<\/a>) first dining hall. She kept the job for 41 years, until her retirement in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>The dining hall later became the science building, then a men&#8217;s dormitory, which was named in her honor.<\/p>\n<p>Due to construction of the new Science Lab building in 2005, Hanley Hall was razed, but NAU used sandstone from the hall in the new building as a tribute to Hanley&#8217;s history.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/back-in-time-with-nau-6\/\">Let\u00a0Inside NAU\u00a0take you back in time this summer with tidbits of university history.
